Cassi Malec Nets Career-High 22 in Season-Opening Victory
Anchorwomen Advance To Play Host Saint Joseph

     West Hartford, CT—Sophomore forward Cassi Malec (Johnston, RI) scored a career-high 22 points and senior forward Kari Geisler (Deerfield, NH) grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds in Rhode Island College’s, 68-57, win over the University of New England in semifinal action of the Blue Jay Tip-Off Classic, hosted by Saint Joseph College. The Anchorwomen will face the hosts, who downed New England College, 60-55, in the Championship Game on Saturday at 3 p.m.

 

RIC jumped out to a 38-27 lead at the half and never looked back. The Anchorwomen shot the ball well, connecting on 54 percent (28-for-52) of their attempts from the floor.

 

Malec, a transfer from Brandeis, shot 9-for-12 from the field, including 2-for-3 from downtown, to go along with three assists and a steal. Geisler notched the double-double with 13 points and 10 boards. Junior forward Josalee Danieli (New Gloucester, ME) and sophomore guard Tyla Martin (Cumberland, RI) each scored eight points. Junior guard Sarah Coughlin (North Attleboro, MA) dished out a game-high four assists, corralled six boards and made two steals.
