Plymouth, NH—Rhode Island College held off a late-match surge to defeat Plymouth State, 21-20, in a battle of New England College Conference Wrestling Association (NECCWA) rivals. The Anchormen, who are the ninth-ranked team in N.E., improve to 2-0 on the season, while the 10th-ranked Panthers stay winless at 0-2.
Freshman Jared Laganas (Dracut, MA) won the opening bout at 149 lbs. to give the Panthers a 3-0 lead. RIC captured the next three matches to take a 15-4 lead, with sophomore Mike Martini (Cranston, RI) earning a decision at 157 lbs., while senior Arty Privedenyuk (Springfield, MA) and sophomore Brendan Casey (Lowell, MA) won by fall at 165 and 174 lbs., respectively.
PSU rebounded with three straight decisions by junior Landon Nelson (Salem, NY) at 184 lbs., freshman Josh St. Ours (Manchester, NH) at 197 lbs., and sophomore Shaun Wilbert (Toms River, NJ) at 285 lbs. to make it 15-13 RIC.
RIC sophomore Steve Goncalves (Cumberland, RI) won by fall at 125 lbs. to give the Anchormen a 21-13 advantage. Senior Matt Friend (Jefferson, NH) and sophomore Shawn Moseley (Hooksett, NH) earned wins for PSU at 133 and 141 lbs., respectively, but the Panthers fell a point short.
In upcoming action, the Anchormen are headed to the RIT Invitational Saturday in Rochester, NY, which begins at 9:30 a.m.
