STIFLING DEFENSE HELPS RIC DOWN PLYMOUTH STATE, 67-52
Anchormen Hold Panthers to 0-for-16 Shooting From Downtown

Providence, RIóRhode Island College played suffocating defense in a 67-52 win over Plymouth State at The Murray Center on Saturday afternoon. The Anchormen did not allow a three-point basket by the Panthers, who shot 0-for-16 from downtown, while connecting on 11 treys of their own. RIC took care of the ball, turning the rock over a season-low seven times, to improve its record to 16-2 overall and 7-2 in the Little East Conference. The Panthers have lost their last four games and fall to 8-12 and 1-8.

Senior guard Kinsey Durgin (Greenwood, ME) keyed an 8-0 run with two threes to open the game as RIC never looked back. He scored a team-high 16 points to go along with four boards, three assists and three steals. Sophomore guard Tirrell Hill (Bronx, NY) and senior forward Brian Stanko (Swansea, MA) had 12 and 11 points, respectively. Hill was 2-for-6 from downtown, while Stanko was 3-for-5. Sophomore guard Bobby Bailey (Fall River, MA) had seven points, seven assists, three boards and two steals.

Free throw shooting kept the Panthers within striking distance, going 18-for-24 from the charity stripe, but did not get any closer than six points in the second stanza. Freshman center Mike Chergey (Bow, NH) led all scorers with 18 points off the bench.

The Anchormen held PSUís leading scorer Devin Ruocco (Dover, NH) to just 3-for-12 shooting and six points. He entered the game with a 15.8 points-per-game average, which was third in the LEC. The Panthers other top offensive threat, senior Mike Walcek (Dover, NH) was 3-for-13 with nine points.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host No.2 Amherst at The Murray Center on Tuesday, Jan. 30 at 7:30 p.m.
