RIC APPROACHES 20 WINS IN VICTORY OVER SOUTHERN MAINE

Gorham, MEóRhode Island College downed Southern Maine, 74-56, on Saturday afternoon at Hill Gymnasium to climb within one win victory of 20 wins for the second time over the past three seasons. Sophomore Bobby Bailey (Fall River, MA) led the Anchormen with 16 points, five boards and three assists to keep RIC in first place in the Little East Conference. Rhode Island College is 19-3 overall and 10-2 in league play with two games left in the regular season. The Huskies fell to 6-16 overall and 2-10 in the LEC with the loss.

Bailey led all scorers with a 7-for-11 effort from the field. Sophomore forward Kaseem Johnson (New Haven, CT) added 10 points for the Anchormen, while seniors center Anthony Pierlioni (Plainville, CT), forward Brian Stanko (Swansea, MA) and guard Kamari Williams (Springfield, MA) each chipped in with eight points apiece.

The Anchormen overcame an eight-point deficit at the 14-minute mark of the second half to surge past Southern Maine. Following an offensive rebound and the put-back from junior forward Drew Coppenrath (Barnet, VT), USM enjoyed its largest lead of the half, 49-41, with 13:57 on the clock.  However, the Anchormen were able to come out of a time out and outscore the Huskies 16-0 over the next six minutes to go ahead 57-49 with 8:06 remaining. Williams scored five of his 10 points in the decisive run as Rhode Island College received points from five different players.

Southern Maine was able to snap its scoring drought on a jumper from Oakley with 7:51 to play to trail by six, 57-51, but Rhode Island College responded scoring the next 11 points of the game, including a pair of three-pointers from senior guard Kinsey Durgin (Greenwood, ME), to take a commanding 68-51 lead with 5:38 remaining. Southern Maine never got closer than 14 points the rest of the way as Rhode Island College cruised to the win.

Rhode Island College finished the game shooting a respectable 45.1 percent from the field making 32 of its 71 field goal attempts. The Huskies shot 36.2 percent (21-for-58) and were hampered by 20 turnovers.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host UMass Dartmouth on Tuesday, Feb. 13 on Senior Night. Durgin, Stanko, Williams, Pierlioni, along with fellow seniors John Weir (Danbury, CT) and Amde Tegbaru (Stockholm, Sweden) will be honored prior to the game.
