Providence, RIóTop-seeded Rhode Island College senior forward Brian Stanko (Swansea, MA) drilled a three-pointer to snap a 69-69 tie with 1.6 seconds remaining in overtime to lift the Anchormen past eighth-seeded Southern Maine, 72-69, in first round action of the 2007 Little East Conference Menís Basketball Tournament.

Rhode Island College will be the site for the semifinals and finals of the LEC tourney on Friday, Feb. 23 and Saturday, Feb. 24 for the first time in school history. Sixth-seeded UMass Boston will face second-seeded Keene State at The Murray Center on Feb. 23 at 6 p.m. The Anchormen will host fourth-seeded UMass Dartmouth at 8 p.m. The finals will be played on Saturday, Feb. 24. Tip-off is TBA.

The Huskies put a scare into the battle-tested Anchormen, taking a five point, 35-30, lead at halftime. Rhode Island College sophomore guard Tirrell Hill (Bronx, NY) helped key a second-half surge, which put the Anchormen up by 13 with 7:45 left to play in regulation. The Huskies would not be denied as freshman forward Greg Whitaker (Presque Isle, ME) ignited a comeback with a three-pointer, and junior guard Josh Daniels (Everett, WA) and junior forward Drew Coppenrath (Barnet, VT) each scored five points, as USM stormed back to tie the game with 1:09 remaining.

RIC senior guard Kinsey Durgin (Greenwood, ME) and Daniels traded a pair of free throws to force the extra session.

Stanko who had missed all seven of his field goal attempts in regulation hit a jumper to put RIC up, 69-67, with 2:40 remaining in overtime. USM sophomore guard Foster Oakley (Farmington, ME) hit a baseline jumper to tie the game with 20 seconds remaining to set up Stankoís heroics.
