2006-07 Men’s Indoor Track and Field Season Summary

 

Providence, RI—Head Coach Kevin Jackson’s team finished the 2006-07 at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) New England Div. III Championships, hosted by Wesleyan on Mar. 2-3. The Anchormen did not score as a team.

 

Rhode Island College competed at the New England Div. III Championships, hosted by Bates on Feb. 16-17. The Anchormen tied for 21st place (24 teams) with a team score of 7.0.

 

The Anchormen competed at the Little East Conference/MASCAC Alliance Championships, held at Tufts University on Feb. 10. RIC placed fourth (10 teams) overall and finished third (five teams) in the Little East with 59.0 and 73.0 points, respectively.

 

Senior Eric Estrada (Riverside, RI) placed eighth in the 55 meters with a season-best time of 6.95 and fifth in the 200 meters with a time of 24.33 at the Coast Guard Invitational on Jan. 20. He placed 16th in the 200 meters with a season-best time of 23.72 at the Harvard Invitational on Dec. 9. Estrada placed 12th in the 55 meters with a time of 6.95 and placed seventh in the 200 meters with a time of 24.15 at the Alden Invitational on Dec. 2.

 

He is a health education major and a 2003 graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School. Estrada attended the Community College of Rhode Island prior to attending RIC.

 

Senior Eric Lonergan (North Kingstown, RI) placed 17th as part of the 4x800 meter relay team with a time of 8:13.39 at the ECAC Championships on Mar. 3. Lonergan placed 19th in the mile with a school-record time of 4:21.90 and 14th as part of the 4x800 meter relay team with a school-record time of 7:56.51 at the New England Open Championships on Feb. 24. He earned All-New England honors in the mile, placing seventh with a time of 4:23.22 at the New England Div. III Championships on Feb. 17. He also placed 11th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:03.71. Lonergan earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in three events at the Little East Conference/MASCAC Alliance Championships on Feb. 10. He placed third in the mile with a time of 4:21.90, third in the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:34.55 and second as part of the 4x800 meter relay team with a time of 8:14.67. Lonergan placed fifth in the mile with a time of 4:22.17 and fifth in the 800 meters with a season-best time of 1:57.76 at the U.R.I. Mega Meet on Feb. 2. He placed first in the 5,000 meters with a school-record time of 15:57.76 and placed second in the 800 meters with a time of 2:03.89 at the Southern Maine Invitational on Jan. 27. Lonergan placed second in the 1,000 meters with a season-best time of 2:37.37 and placed first in the 3,000 meters with a time of 8:58.91 at the Coast Guard Invitational on Jan. 20. He placed ninth in the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:40.31 and placed third in the 3,000 meters with a school-record time of 8:46.64 at the Tufts Invitational on Jan. 13.

 

As a junior in 2005-06, he placed sixth in the mile with a time of 4:25.19 at the Last Chance Meet on Mar. 4. Lonergan placed 18th in the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:03.48 at the N.E. Div. III Championships on Feb. 18. He earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in the mile and as part of the 4x800 meter relay team at the Alliance Championships on Feb. 13. He placed seventh in the mile with a time of 4:38.17 and fifth as part of the 4x800 meter relay with a time of 8:41.54. He also placed tenth in the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:42.69. Lonergan placed fifth in the 3,000 meters with a season-best time of 8:52.47 at the Tufts Invitational on Feb. 4. He placed fifth in the mile and second in the 3,000 meters with times of 4:35.43 and 9:13.94, respectively, at the Southern Maine Invitational on Jan. 28. Lonergan placed fourth in the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:36.81 at the Tufts Invitational on Jan. 21. He placed third in the mile and fifth in the 1,000 meters with times of 4:32.85 and 2:44.27, respectively, at the Wesleyan Invitational on Jan. 14. Lonergan placed 12th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:02.74 at the Harvard Invitational on Dec. 10. He placed fifth in the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:13.62 at the Alden Invitational on Dec. 3.

 

As a sophomore in 2004-05, Lonergan earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in the 1,000 meters, placing sixth with a time of 2:41.63 at the Alliance Championships on Feb. 12. Lonergan earned All-Alliance/Little East honors as part of the 4x800 meter relay team, which placed fifth with a time of 8:53.76. He placed tenth in the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:39.98 at the Tufts Invitational of Feb. 5. He placed eighth in the 800 meters and 14th in the mile with times of 2:07.63 and 4:46.25, respectively, at the Southern Maine Invitational on Jan. 29. He placed 24th in the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:39.63 at the Tufts Invitational on Jan. 22.  He placed fifth in the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:44.68 and seventh in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:19.04 at the Wesleyan Invitational on Jan. 15. He placed 23rd in the 800 meters with a time of 2:03.38 at the Harvard Invitational on Dec. 11. Lonergan placed tenth in the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:50.14 at the Alden Invitational on Dec. 4.

 

As a freshman in 2003-04, he placed 16th in the mile with a time of 4:41.55 at the Yale Classic on Jan. 10. He finished tenth in the mile with a season-best time of 4:39.81 at the Harvard Invitational on Dec. 13. Lonergan placed seventh in the 3,000 meters with a season-best time of 9:36.62 at the Alden Invitational on Dec. 6.

 

He is an elementary education major with a concentration in general science and a 2003 graduate of North Kingstown High School.

 

Senior John Martinelli (North Providence, RI) earned All-Alliance/Little East honors as part of the 4x400 meter relay team, which placed seventh with a time of 3:49.66, at the Little East Conference/MASCAC Alliance Championships on Feb. 10. He also placed 17th in the 400 meters with a season-best time of 54.67 at the same meet.

 

As a sophomore in 2004-05, he placed 12th in the 200 meters with a time of 24.83 and eighth in the 400 meters with a time of 55.72 at the Wesleyan Invitational on Jan. 15. He placed 41st in the 400 meters with a time of 55.14 and 55th in the 200 meters with a time of 24.68 at the Harvard Invitational on Dec. 11. Martinelli placed ninth in the 400 meters with a time of 55.24 at the Alden Invitational on Dec. 4.

 

As a freshman in 2003-04, Martinelli earned All-New England honors in one event at the N.E. Div. III Championships on Feb. 21. Martinelli placed eighth as part of the 4x400 meter relay team with a school-record time of 3:28.14. He earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in two events at the LEC/MASCAC Alliance Championships on Feb. 14. He placed eighth in the 400 meters with a season-best time of 54.26 and first as part of the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:32.97. He also placed 21st in the 55 meters with a season-best time of 7.12 and 18th in the 200 meters with a season-best time of 24.64. He placed 18th in the 400 meters with a time of 54.32 at the Tufts Invitational on Feb. 7. He finished 21st in the 400 meters with a time of 55.51 at the Tufts Invitational on Jan. 24. He placed 12th in the 200 meters with a time of 25.28 and 12th in the 400 meters with a time of 56.08 at the Wesleyan Invitational on Jan. 17. He finished 33rd in the prelims of the 55 meters with a time of 7.17 at the Yale Classic on Jan. 10. He placed 16th in the 60 meters with a school-record time of 7.60 and 16th in the 400 meters with a time of 54.59 at the Harvard Invitational on Dec. 13.

 

He is a secondary education major with a concentration in science and a 2003 graduate of La Salle Academy.

 

Senior Dan Newman (Smithfield, RI) was named the team’s MVP. Newman earned All-New England honors in the high jump, placing fifth with a leap of 1.87 meters, at the New England Div. III Championships on Feb. 17. He earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in three events at the Little East Conference/MASCAC Alliance Championships on Feb. 10. He placed first in the high jump with a leap of 1.88 meters, eighth in the 55 meter hurdles with a season-best time of 9.26 and was seventh as part of the 4x400 meter relay team with a time of 3:49.66. Newman placed fourth in the high jump with a season-best jump of 1.90 meters at the U.R.I. Mega Meet on Feb. 2. He placed first in the high jump with a jump of 1.82 meters and placed fifth in the triple jump with a jump of 11.92 meters at the Southern Maine Invitational on Jan. 27. Newman placed fourth in the high jump with a jump of 1.85 meters, third in the high jump with a jump of 1.91 meters and sixth in the triple jump with a season-best jump of 11.86 meters at the Coast Guard Invitational on Jan. 20. He placed sixth in the high jump with a jump of 1.90 meters at the Harvard Invitational on Dec. 9. Newman placed fourth in the high jump with a jump of 1.87 meters at the Alden Invitational on Dec. 2.

 

As a junior in 2005-06, Newman earned All-New England honors in the high jump, placing eighth with a leap of 6’01.00”. He earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in the high jump and the 4x400 meter relay at the Alliance Championships on Feb. 13. He placed second in the high jump with a leap of 1.87 meters and eighth as part of the 4x400 meter relay squad with a time of 3:37.49. Newman placed fifth in the high jump with a leap of 1.83 meters at the Tufts Invitational on Feb. 4. He placed first in the high jump and third in the triple jumps with leaps of 1.87 and 11.86 meters, respectively, at the Southern Maine Invitational on Jan. 28. Newman placed second in the high jump with a leap of 1.88 meters at the Tufts Invitational on Jan. 21. He placed second in the high jump and fifth in the triple jumps with leaps of 1.87 and 11.53 meters, respectively, at the Wesleyan Invitational on Jan. 14. Newman placed fourth in the high jump with a leap of 1.90 meters at the Harvard Invitational on Dec. 10. He placed second in the high jump with a leap of 1.88 meters at the Alden Invitational on Dec. 3.

 

As a sophomore in 2004-05, he earned All-New England honors in the high jump, tying for sixth with a leap of 1.91 meters at the New England Div. III Championships on Feb. 19. He tied for eighth place in the high jump with a leap of 1.80 meters at the Trinity College Last Chance meet on Feb. 5. He placed second in the high jump with a leap of 6’00.25” at the Southern Maine Invitational on Jan. 29. Newman placed first in the high jump with a leap of 1.93 meters at the Tufts Invitational on Jan. 22. He placed second in the high jump with a height of 1.93 meters at the Wesleyan Invitational on Jan. 15.  He placed eighth in the high jump with a height of 1.86 meters at the Harvard Invitational on Dec. 11.

 

As a freshman in 2003-04, Newman earned All-New England honors in one event at the N.E. Div. III Championships on Feb. 21, placing seventh in the high jump with a school-record height of 6'04.00". He finished third in the high jump with a mark of 6’01.25” at the Tufts Invitational on Feb. 7. He placed second in the high jump with an effort of 6'02.00" at the Southern Maine Invitational on Jan. 31. Newman finished eighth in the high jump with a mark of 1.83 meters at the Tufts Invitational on Jan. 24. He placed fourth in the high jump with a mark of 5’10.00” at the Wesleyan Invitational on Jan. 17. He finished sixth in the high jump with a mark of 6’01.25” at the Yale Classic on Jan. 10. He placed third in the high jump with mark of 6’02.00” at the Alden Invitational on Dec. 6.

 

He is a physical education/health major and a 2003 graduate of Smithfield High School.

 

Junior Greg Ahnrud (Chepachet, RI) placed 17th as part of the 4x800 meter relay team with a time of 8:13.39 at the ECAC Championships on Mar. 3. He placed 14th as part of the 4x800 meter relay team with a school-record time of 7:56.51 at the New England Open Championships on Feb. 24. Ahnrud earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in two events. He placed sixth in the 1,000 meters with a season-best time of 2:42.31 and second as part of the 4x800 meter relay team with a time of 8:14.67 at the Little East Conference/MASCAC Alliance Championships on Feb. 10. Ahnrud placed 18th in the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:43.87 at the U.R.I. Mega Meet on Feb. 2. He placed fifth in the mile with a time of 4:41.36 at the Southern Maine Invitational on Jan. 27. Ahnrud placed seventh in the 600 meters with a season-best time of 1:30.56 at the Coast Guard Invitational on Jan. 20. He placed 26th in the 800 meters with a season-best time of 2:05.56 at the Harvard Invitational on Dec. 9. Ahnrud placed fifth in the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:45.14 at the Alden Invitational on Dec. 2.

 

Junior Greg Clark (Pawtucket, RI) placed 11th in the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:52.24 at the Little East Conference/MASCAC Alliance Championship on Feb. 10.  He placed ninth in the 3,000 meters with a time of 10:37.46 at the Southern Maine Invitational on Jan. 27. Clark placed seventh in the 800 meters with a season-best time of 2:11.28 at the Coast Guard Invitational on Jan. 20. He placed 18th in the 1,000 meters with a season-best time of 2:51.33 at the Tufts Invitational on Jan. 13. Clark placed third in the 3,000 meters with a season-best time of 10:25.13 at the Alden Invitational on Dec. 2. He placed 40th in the mile with a time of 5:01.10 at the Harvard Invitational on Dec. 9.

 

Junior Mike Keeling (Chepachet, RI) placed 22nd in the 400 meters with a time of 53.14 at the Harvard Invitational on Dec. 9.

 

Junior James Polak (Smithfield, RI) earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in the weight throw, placing eighth with a season-best distance of 13.09 meters at the Little East Conference/MASCAC Alliance Championships on Feb. 10. Polak placed eighth in the weight throw with a throw of 13.06 meters at the U.R.I. Mega Meet on Feb. 2. He placed fifth in the weight throw with a throw of 12.36 meters at the Southern Maine Invitational on Jan. 27. Polak placed 11th in the weight throw with a throw of 11.99 meters at the Coast Guard Invitational on Jan. 20. He placed seventh in the weight throw with a throw of 12.27 meters at the Tufts Invitational on Jan. 13. Polak placed 22nd in the weight throw with a throw of 11.40 meters at the Harvard Invitational on Dec. 9. He placed seventh in the weight throw with a throw of 11.74 meters at the Alden Invitational on Dec. 2.

 

Junior Mike Van Gieson (Foster, RI) placed 14th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:00.42 at the ECAC Championships on Mar. 3. He placed 17th as part of the 4x800 meter relay team with a time of 8:13.39. He placed 14th as part of the 4x800 meter relay team with a school-record time of 7:56.51 at the New England Open Championships on Feb. 24. Van Gieson earned All-New England honors in the 600 meters, placing eighth with a season-best time of 1:25.58 at the New England Div. III Championships on Feb. 17. He earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in two events. He placed first in the 600 meters and second as part of the 4x800 meter relay team with a time of 8:14.67 at the Little East Conference/MASCAC Alliance Championships on Feb. 10. Van Gieson placed fourth in the 800 meters with a season-best time of 1:57.64 at the U.R.I. Mega Meet on Feb. 2. He placed first in the 800 meters with a time of 2:03.78 at the Southern Maine Invitational on Jan. 27. Van Gieson placed eighth in the 600 meters with a time of 1:30.58 at the Coast Guard Invitational on Jan. 20. He placed 14th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:01.49 at the Harvard Invitational on Dec. 9.

 

Sophomore David Simpson (West Warwick, RI) placed 14th in the 800 meters with a season-best time of 2:00.42 at the ECAC Championships on Mar. 3. He placed 17th as part of the 4x800 meter relay team with a time of 8:13.39. He placed 14th as part of the 4x800 meter relay team with a school-record time of 7:56.51 at the New England Open Championships on Feb. 24. He earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in two events. He placed seventh in the 600 meters with a season-best time of 1:27.14 and second as part of the 4x800 meter relay team with a time of 8:14.67 at the Little East Conference/MASCAC Alliance Championships on Feb. 10. Simpson placed 15th in the 500 meters with a season-best time of 1:11.58 at the U.R.I. Mega Meet on Feb. 2. He placed second in the 600 meters with a time of 1:29.28 at the Southern Maine Invitational on Jan. 27. Simpson placed sixth in the 600 meters with a time of 1:30.21 at the Coast Guard Invitational on Jan. 20. He placed 14th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:06.97 at the Tufts Invitational on Jan. 13. He placed 29th in the 800 meters with a season-best time of 2:06.63 at the Harvard Invitational on Dec. 9. Simpson placed sixth in the 1,000 meters with a season-best time of 2:50.22 at the Alden Invitational on Dec. 2. 

 

Freshman Kyle Duguay (Cumberland, RI) placed 17th in the 200 meters with a time of 24.06 in the Little East Conference/MASCAC Alliance Championship on Feb. 10. Duguay placed 13th in the 200 meters with a season-best time of 23.94 at the U.R.I. Mega Meet on Feb. 2.  He placed second in the 55 meters with a season-best time of 6.87 and placed fifth in the 200 meters with a time of 24.41 at the Southern Maine Invitational on Jan. 27. Duguay placed ninth in the 55 meters with a time of 6.95 at the Coast Guard Invitational on Jan. 20. He placed 11th in the 55 meters with a time of 6.91, 16th in the 200 meters with a time of 24.61 and 12th in the 600 meters with a season-best time of 1:28.27 at the Tufts Invitational on Jan. 13. Duguay placed 38th in the 200 meters with a time of 24.69 at the Harvard Invitational on Dec. 9. He placed 15th in the 55 meters with a time of 7.05 and 13th in the 200 meters with a time of 25.14 at the Alden Invitational on Dec. 2. 

 

Freshman Kwame Gyampo (Providence, RI) earned All-Alliance/Little East honors as part of the 4x400 meter relay team, which placed seventh with a time of 3:49.66, at the Little East Conference/MASCAC Alliance Championships on Feb. 10. He also placed 33rd in the 200 meters with a season-best time of 25.39 at the same meet. Gyampo placed 21st in the 200 meters with a time of 25.69 at the U.R.I. Mega Meet on Feb. 2.  He placed 11th in the 200 meters with a time of 25.60 at the Southern Maine Invitational on Jan. 27.

 

Freshman Kevin Leber (Newport, RI) earned All-Alliance/Little East honors as part of the 4x400 meter relay team, which placed seventh with a time of 3:49.66, at the Little East Conference/MASCAC Alliance Championships on Feb. 10. Leber placed 15th in the long jump with a jump of 5.59 meters at the same meet. He placed 13th in the long jump with a season-best jump of 5.90 meters at the U.R.I. Mega Meet on Feb. 2.   Leber placed seventh in the long jump with a jump of 5.65 meters and 11th in the 400 meters with a time of 57.62 at the Southern Maine Invitational on Jan. 27. He placed 10th in the long jump with a jump of 5.40 meters at the Coast Guard Invitational on Jan. 20. Leber placed 13th in the long jump with a jump of 5.54 meters at the Tufts Invitational on Jan. 13. He placed 33rd in the long jump with a jump of 5.24 meters at the Harvard Invitational on Dec. 9.

 

Freshman Max Willett (Portsmouth, RI) earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in two events. He placed second in the long jump with a leap of 6.32 meters and was seventh in the high jump at 1.73 meters at the Little East Conference/MASCAC Alliance Championships on Feb. 10. He placed fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 12.04 meters and third in the 55 meters with a season-best time of 6.88 at the Southern Maine Invitational on Jan. 27. Willett placed 10th in 55 meters with a time of 6.98, eighth in the high jump with a jump of 1.80 meters and also second in the long jump with a leap of 6.21 meters at the Coast Guard Invitational on Jan. 20. He placed sixth in the high jump with a jump of 1.76 meters and seventh in the long jump with a leap of 6.16 meters at the Tufts Invitational on Jan. 13. He placed eighth in the long jump with a school-record distance of 6.51 meters at the Harvard Invitational on Dec. 9. Willett placed third in the high jump with a leap of 1.93 meters, which tied the school record, and was sixth in the long jump with a distance of 6.21 meters at the Alden Invitational on Dec. 2.
