Rhode Island College Women’s Volleyball
Goes 3-1 at Brandeis Invitational
Garcia Named to All-Tourney Squad

 

Waltham, MA—The Rhode Island College women’s volleyball team upped their record to 4-3 on the season by going 3-1 at the Brandeis Invitational on Sept. 7-8.

 

The Anchorwomen squared off against Little East Conference rival UMass Boston in a non-league tilt on Friday night, downing the Beacons, 3-1 (30-25, 30-26, 26-30, 30-22). Senior middle blocker Kimiyo Garcia (Riverside, RI) was a force, posting 18 kills, 10 digs, six blocks and four service aces in the win. Senior hitter Sherri Heard (Coventry, RI) logged eight kills and five blocks, while senior outside hitter Madison Greene (Cranston, RI) registered six kills and four blocks.

 

Head Coach Luis Carvalho’s charges faced tourney host Brandeis in their second match of the evening, falling, 3-1 (12-30, 22-30, 30-26, 25-30). Garcia and Heard led the team again offensively with 14 and 10 kills, respectively. The Judges went on to win their invitational with a perfect 4-0 mark.

 

The Anchorwomen came back on day two and took two matches. Rhode Island College opened the day with a 3-0 (30-24, 30-21, 30-27) win over Smith. In a balanced attack, Heard posted a team-high 13 kills. Garcia recorded nine kills, seven blocks, five digs and two aces. Senior setter Amy Souza (Tiverton, RI) handed out 24 assists.

 

RIC wrapped up the weekend with a 3-0 (30-23, 30-25, 30-17) win over Babson. Garcia registered 14 kills, seven digs and five blocks as 13 Anchorwomen saw action in the match. Sophomore outside hitter Sharon Corriveau (Coventry, RI) logged eight kills and 11 digs.

 

Garcia was named to the Brandeis Invitational’s All-Tournament Team. She posted a .400 hitting percentage with 55 kills, seven service aces, 31 digs and 21 blocks in 14 games.

 

In upcoming action, Carvalho’s team will face Emmanuel on Tuesday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m.
