ANCHORWOMEN SPLIT LEC OPENERS
RIC Downs Eastern Connecticut;
Comeback Bid Falls Short in vs. PSU

Willimantic, CT—The Rhode Island College women’s volleyball team split a pair of Little East Conference matches on Saturday afternoon at Eastern Connecticut.

 

The Anchorwomen swept Eastern Connecticut, 3-0, in the day’s opening contest. The Warriors had swept Rhode Island College in the Championship Match of the 2006 Little East Conference Women’s Volleyball Tournament. RIC got big performances from senior hitter Sherri Heard (Coventry, RI) and senior middle blocker Kimiyo Garcia (Riverside, RI). Heard logged a team-high 18 kills, while Garcia registered 14 kills, 13 digs and five blocks. Freshman libero Mary Kate Winter (Narragansett, RI) was credited with a team-high 16 digs, while senior setter Amy Souza (Tiverton, RI) handed out 19 of the squad’s 38 assists.

 

Plymouth State held off a late-match rally by the Anchorwomen to win, 3-2, in the day’s second match. The Panthers took games one and two, while RIC bounced back with wins in game three and four. PSU took game five, 15-13, for the match. Garcia was dominant, posting a season-high 31 kills, to go along with 16 digs and six blocks. Heard posted 21 kills and four blocks. Souza dished out 36 assists.

 

RIC is currently 7-4 overall and 1-1 in the Little East Conference. In upcoming action, Head Coach Luis Carvalho’s team will play their first home match of the season, hosting Wesleyan on Tuesday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m.
