ANCHORMEN FALL, 2-1, TO OWLS
Laprey Nets Goal in Losing Effort

Westfield, MA – Rhode Island College lost for the third time in the club’s last four games as Westfield State downed the Anchormen, 2-1, in collegiate men’s soccer action on Wednesday afternoon.

All three goals in the game came within the first 23 minutes of action. Westfield State sophomore Ben Berthiaume (Swansea, MA) converted a penalty kick, which proved to be the game-winning goal, in the 14th minute. Four minutes earlier, Berthiaume also was credited with an assist, along with Jeff Trudeau (Swansea, MA), on the Owls’ first goal, which was scored by senior Brennan Struthers (Easthampton, MA). RIC sophomore midfielder James Laprey (Coventry, RI) scored his first goal as an Anchorman with an unassisted tally in the 23rd minute, but the Anchormen could not get the equalizer.

Westfield State used two goalkeepers as junior Mike Thompson (Feeding Hills, MA) made three saves in the first half before giving way to senior Mark Tiffany (Easthampton, MA), who made two stops, to preserve the victory. RIC senior netminder Jadon Neves (Bristol, RI) made two saves as his record falls to 3-5-1.

RIC drops to 7-6-2, while Westfield, which won for the third straight game, ups its record to 6-8.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will play at Eastern Connecticut on Saturday, Oct. 20.
