ANCHORWOMEN DEFEAT SOUTHERN MAINE, 6-3
RIC Advances in Little East Tournament

Willimantic, CT—Second-seeded Rhode Island College defeated fifth-seeded Southern Maine, 6-3, in first round action of the 2008 Little East Conference Softball Tournament Thursday afternoon at tourney host Eastern Connecticut. The Anchorwomen will face the winner of fourth-seeded Keene State and third-seeded Western Connecticut tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. RIC swept both clubs during their regular season meetings.

 

RIC senior catcher Jeanne Rosa’s (Milford, CT) and sophomore shortstop Kelsey Souza’s (Braintree, MA) infield singles in the bottom of the second inning capped a two-run outburst and put the Anchorwomen on top, 2-1.

Rhode Island College came back with three additional runs the following frame as junior left fielder Kelli McCartin (Cranston, RI) knocked in a run and Rosa plated two more with a bases loaded single up the middle.

 

Southern Maine cut the deficit to two runs, 5-3, in the top of the fourth as sophomore second baseman Tiffany Jordan (Bryant Pond, ME) picked up an RBI-single and one more came in on a RIC error.

 

RIC freshman center fielder Donielle Mattoon (Coventry, RI) smacked a two-out RBI single to give classmate starting pitcher Melanie Neece (Westfield, MA) some insurance in the fourth.

 

Sophomore Jenna Deveines (Lowville, NY) came on in relief in the sixth to secure her first save of the year. Neece threw five innings, allowing three runs, only one of which was earned, on three hits, while striking out five, to earn her 16th win (16-3).

 

Freshman second baseman Amanda Perry (New Bedford, MA) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Mattoon went 2-for-4 with one run scored, a double and two RBI. Freshman designated player Kayla Jandreau (Plainville, CT) went 1-for-2 with two runs scored. Rosa went 2-for-3 with three RBI.

 

Southern Maine senior pitcher Kristina Grondin (Sanford, ME) took the loss (11-5), allowing six runs on 12 hits.
