RHODE ISLAND COLLEGE SOFTBALL ELIMINATED FROM NCAA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND
Anchorwomen Fall, 4-1, to Wisconsin-Whitewater

Salem, Va.—Eighth-seeded Rhode Island College fell to fifth-seeded Wisconsin-Whitewater, 4-1, in game five of the 2008 NCAA Div. III Softball National Championship Round on Saturday morning at the Moyer Sports Complex.

 

The Anchorwomen (36-9) see their season come to an end in the loss.

 

The Warhawks (36-10) scored runs in both the first and second innings off of sophomore pitcher Jenna Deveines (Lowville, NY). Junior center fielder Amy Gahl (Beloit, WI)  led off with a single in the first and later scored on junior Suzanne Gersich’s (Wadsworth, IL) RBI single.

 

Wisconsin-Whitewater loaded the bases in the second and Deveines was lifted for freshman Melanie Neece (Westfield, MA). Gahl came through with a one-run single to left field to put the Warhawks up, 2-0.

 

The lead swelled to 4-0 in the third as senior first baseman Meghann Brennfleck (Fox River Grove, IL) belted a two-run homer.

 

The Anchorwomen scored their only run of the National Championship Round in the sixth as sophomore pinch hitter Cassy Taverna (Bedford, MA) brought in freshman designated player Kayla Jandreau (Plainville, CT) with a single to center field.

Wisconsin-Whitewater freshman pitcher Jessica Stang (Minnetonka, MN) earned the win (13-5), allowing one run on four hits, while striking out seven. Deveines took the loss (14-4), allowing two runs on three hits in 1.1 innings, while Neece surrendered two runs on four hits in 4.2 IP.
