2007-08 Rhode Island College Menís Golf
Season Summary

(Overall Record: 8-5)

Providence, RI--Head Coach Greg Gammellís team finished the 2007-08 season with an 8-5 overall record. The Anchormen posted a 4-3 mark in the fall, while recording a 4-2 record in the spring.

 

RIC placed fifth (eight teams) at the Great Northeast Athletic Conference/Little East Conference Alliance Championships with a two-day total of 647 on Oct. 26-27.

 

Rhode Island College placed 37th (43 teams) with a two-day score of 685 at the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) Championships on Oct. 22-23.

 

 

 

Senior Derrick Garforth (Tiverton, RI) closed out his career competing in six contests this season, averaging a score of 90.0. He competed in two matches in the fall, averaging a score of 90.5, while averaging an 89.8 in four contests during the spring. He shot a season-low score of 88 during a quad-meet against Worcester State, Elms and Wesleyan on May 2.

 

As a junior in 2006-07, Garforth competed in 11 contests and averaged a score of 86.7. He competed in seven matches during the fall, averaging a score of 87.9, while averaging an 85.0 in four contests during the spring. He shot a season-low score of 79 at Mitchell on Sept. 13.

 

As a sophomore in 2005-06, Garforth saw action in nine contests and averaged a score of 91.4. He competed in five matches in the fall, averaging a score of 89.4, while averaging a 94.0 in four contests during the spring. He shot a season-low score of 77 in the tri-match vs. Johnson and Wales and Wentworth on Sept. 30.

 

As a freshman in 2004-05, Garforth competed in eight contests and averaged a score of 92.9. He competed in all five matches during the fall, averaging a score of 90.4, while averaging a 97.0 in three contests in the spring. He shot a season-low score of 85 in a loss to Johnson and Wales on Oct. 1.

 

He is a secondary education major with a concentration in history and a 2004 graduate of Tiverton High School.

 

Junior Lionel Noel (West Warwick, RI) began action in the spring where he competed in six contests and averaged a score of 78.3. He shot a season-low score of 74 twice, in first place finishes during quad-meets against Worcester State, Elms and Wesleyan on May 2 and Johnson and Wales, Wentworth and Newbury on April 18.

 

Junior R.J. Tassoni (Greenville, RI) saw action in five fall contests this season and averaged a score of 82.3. He shot a season-low score of 76 at the Blazer Invitational on Oct. 2.

 

Sophomore Derek Audette (Lincoln, RI) only saw action in two fall contests this season and averaged a score of 80.0. He shot a season-low score of 79 during a quad meet against Nichols, Elms and Wentworth on Sept. 26.

 

Sophomore Barrett Kern (Pawtucket, RI) saw action in six fall contests this season and averaged a score of 81.9. He shot a season-low score of 75 twice, once at the Johnson and Wales Invitational on Sept. 21 and again against Brandeis on Oct. 17.

 

Freshman Tim Davis (Rochester, NY) competed in 10 contests this season and averaged a score of 87.0. He competed in four matches in the fall, averaging a score of 85.2, while averaging an 88.6 in all six contests during the spring. He shot a season-low score of 81 at the Blazer Invitational on Oct. 2.

 

Freshman Derek Jensen (Cumberland, RI) competed in 12 contests this season and averaged a score of 81.4. He competed in all seven matches in the fall, averaging a score of 80.6, while averaging an 83.0 in five contests during the spring. He shot a season-low score of 72 during first round action at the Alliance Championships on Oct. 26. He won the Alliance Championship individual title, the first RIC golfer to accomplish this feat, with a final two-day score of 146. Jensen was named the team MVP.

 

Freshman Kevin Smith (West Hartford, CT) saw action in all seven fall contests this season and averaged a score of 82.1. He shot a season-low score of 77 during a quad meet against Nichols, Elms and Wentworth on Sept. 26.

 

Freshman Steve Zahn (West Warwick, RI) competed in seven contests this season and averaged a score of 92.6. He competed in one match in the fall, averaging a score of 89.5, while averaging a 93.4 in all six contests during the spring. He shot a season-low score of 88 twice, during a quad meet against Johnson and Wales, Wentworth and Newbury on April 18 and again on Apr. 25 at the Johnson & Wales Spring Invitational.
