BEACONS EARN FIRST CONFERENCE WIN

IN 12 YEARS

Providence, RIóUMass Boston junior forward Stacy Leonard (Rockland, MA) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 64th minute to lead the Beacons past Rhode Island College, 2-0, in Little East Conference womenís soccer action on Saturday afternoon.

The win marks the first conference victory for UMass Boston (2-4, 1-0 LEC) in 12 years and snaps a 12-game losing streak to the Anchorwomen. RIC (1-7, 0-1) had not lost to UMB since the programís first year as a varsity sport in 1995.

The two clubís played a scoreless first half, with the Beacons holding a six-shot advantage, 12-6, after 45 minutes.

Leonard put UMB in the driverís seat by breaking in on the left side, deking a defender and firing a right-footed shot past RIC sophomore goalkeeper Maddie Pirri (Bristol, RI) for her first goal of the season.

UMass Boston got an insurance goal from sophomore midfielder Nicki Finamore (Rockland, MA) in the 83rd minute. Freshman midfielder Molly Kuchar (Ashville, NC) generated the scoring opportunity off a corner kick. Her volley went over Pirriís outstretched hand to Finamore, whose shot ricocheted off a RIC defender and into the net.

Beacon junior goalkeeper Courtney Haroules (Littleton, MA) made six saves to earn her second win (2-2) and her first shutout of the year. Pirri made eight saves in a losing effort (1-7).

UMass Boston outshot RIC, 20-16, in the game.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Bridgewater State in non-conference action on Tuesday, Sept. 23 at 4 p.m.
