Anchormen Stay Unbeaten in Little East Play

 

Providence, RIóRhode Island College freshman forward Bruno Costa (Pawtucket, RI) snapped a scoreless contest with just 1:24 left in regulation to lift the Anchormen to a 1-0 win over Western Connecticut in Little East Conference menís soccer action on Saturday afternoon.

 

 

 

RIC improves to 6-3-2 overall and 3-0 in the Little East. The Anchormen are unbeaten (6-0-2) in their last eight games and have not surrendered a goal in conference action. The Colonials have yet to score in conference circuit and fall to 5-6-1 overall and 0-2-1 in the LEC.

Despite playing a man down for most of the second half, WestConn played RIC tough down the stretch and the game seemed to be heading for an extra session.

 

After a throw-in, the ball was deflected to RIC sophomore defender Corey Carvalho (Dartmouth, MA) at midfield, who promptly fired a pass towards the top of the box. Costa collected the ball, turned and fired a shot into the back of the net for his team-leading sixth goal of the season in the 89th minute.

 

RIC freshman goalkeeper Justin OíConnor (North Kingstown, RI) made three saves to raise his record to 5-2-2. WestConn senior netminder Dan Michalowski (Bristol, CT) made eight saves as his personal mark drops to 5-6-1.

 

The Anchormen held a 16-9 advantage in shots, including a 10-3 mark in the first half.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will play at Clark, while the Colonials will host Worcester State, on Wednesday, Oct. 8.
