Anchorwomen Earn No. 3 Seed in
Little East Quarterfinals

 

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Rhode Island College earned the third seed in the 2008 Little East Conference Women’s Tennis Championship Tournament after the Anchorwomen completed the conference circuit with a 5-2 mark. The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and Bridgewater State College secured the top-two seeds with 7-0 and 6-1 records, respectively.

 

Rhode Island College will host sixth-seeded University of Massachusetts Boston (6-5, 2-5 LEC) at 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 14 in the quarterfinal round at the Rhode Island College Tennis Courts. Earlier this season, the Anchorwomen swept the Beacons, 9-0. The winner of the second-seeded Bears (10-3, 6-1) and seventh-seeded Salem State College (3-7, 1-6) will await the winner four days later in the semifinal round. 

 

 

 Senior Meg Funk

 

In the opposite side of the 2008 championship draw, eighth-seeded University of Southern Maine (1-11, 0-7) will travel to the top-seeded Corsairs (11-1, 7-0), while fifth-seeded Plymouth State University (4-8, 3-4) will visit fourth-seeded Western Connecticut State University (8-3, 4-3). The championship match is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Oct. 19 with the champion earning the right to represent the Little East in the NCAA Division III Tournament.

 

For the first time since the inception of women’s tennis as a conference sponsored sport in 1994, the Little East Conference will feature a team championship tournament instead of the flight format. The eight-team tournament field will mirror the national tournament structure with the first team to earn five points will be declared the winner and advance to the next round. In team championship play, the match will begin with the three doubles games (eight-game Pro set) followed by the singles rounds. The winner of each match will receive one point towards the overall team score.

Under the direction of first-year Head Coach Liz Barrette, Rhode Island College has posted an overall record of 7-7. Senior Meg Funk (Oakdale, Conn.) has set the tone for the Anchorwomen lineup at top-flight singles with a 9-4 mark. The four-time All-Conference selection ranks among the program’s leaders in career singles wins (3rd, 44) and career singles winning percentage (10th, .746). Sophomore Brittany LaBarre (Greenville, R.I.), junior Julie Bannon (Narragansett, R.I.), sophomore Kim Field (Barrington, R.I.), freshman Gabriela Batek (Greenville, R.I.), and senior Ashley St. Amand (West Warwick, R.I.) complete the Rhode Island College singles roster,
