MacLELLAN’s FOUR POINTS GET WESTFIELD STATE BACK ON WINNING TRACK

Providence, RI – Sophomore midfielder Kate MacLellan (Wilbraham, MA) figured in each of Westfield State’s scores as the Owls defeated Rhode Island College, 3-1, in collegiate women’s soccer action at the RIC Soccer Field on Tuesday afternoon.

The Owls, who saw their nine-game winning streak come to an end last Friday, raised their record to 11-4. The Anchorwomen fall to 1-14-1.

Westfield State senior forward Jenn Leveille (Southampton, MA) put the Owls up, 1-0, in the fifth minute, heading in a MacLellan crossing pass for her sixth goal of the year.

Sophomore forward Meg Gearin (Groton, MA) scored what proved to be the eventual game-winner in the ninth minute, taking a MacLellan pass and lofting it over RIC sophomore goalkeeper Maddie Pirri (Bristol, RI) for her team-leading 10th goal.

Despite trailing at the half, RIC pulled to within one goal in the 55th minute. Senior forward Kayla Fleming (Pawtucket, RI) fired a shot that forced Westfield State freshman goalkeeper Jess Pieciak (Three River, MA) to make a diving stop. Pieciak could not corral the loose ball and RIC freshman forward Brittany Caldwell (Warwick, RI) shot it into the open net for her first collegiate goal.

MacLellan iced the game with her seventh goal of the year in the 68th minute, converting a crossing pass from junior midfielder Colleen Kenney (Longmeadow, MA).

Pieciak made eight saves to raise her personal mark to 11-2, while Pirri made four saves in a losing effort.

In upcoming action, RIC resumes Little East Conference play at Eastern Connecticut on Saturday, Oct. 25.
