SOUTHERN MAINE SPOILS RICíS BID FOR LEC TITLE
Anchormen To Host Warriors on Nov. 5 in Little East Tournament

 

Gorham, MEóSouthern Maine defeated Rhode Island College, 1-0, to capture the Little East Conference Menís Soccer Regular Season Championship on Saturday afternoon. The Anchormen needed a win or a tie heading into the contest to secure the title and home field advantage throughout the upcoming Little East Tournament.

 

 

 

RIC (10-5-4, 5-1-1 LEC) suffered its first conference loss of the season. The Anchormen will be the No. 2 seed and host third-seeded Eastern Connecticut in the semifinals of the 2008 Little East Conference Menís Soccer Tournament on Wednesday, Nov. 5. The Huskies (12-7-1, 6-1 LEC) will await the winner of Mondayís play-in game.

 

 

 

USM senior Greg Cox (Brookline, MA) scored his ninth goal of the season in the 75th minute for the decisive marker. Cox slotted home a pass from senior Sinisa Bajic (Belgrade, Serbia) to break a scoreless tie. Bajic had won a ball along the left wing touch line and made a strong run down the side before passing the ball across the box to a streaking Cox.

 

With the lead, the Huskies defended their goal over the final 15 minutes to preserve the win and take their first-ever LEC regular season title.

 

Junior goalkeeper David Kreps (Agawam, MA) made four saves for USM to earn his sixth shutout of the season.  Freshman Justin OíConnor (North Kingstown, RI) registered two saves for Rhode Island College.

 

RIC outshot Southern Maine, 9-4, in the game with senior midfielder Brandon Migliore (Coventry, RI) leading the way with three attempts.
