RODRIGUES SENDS ANCHORMEN TO
LITTLE EAST CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
RIC to Host Plymouth State on Nov. 8

Providence, RIóRhode Island College junior forward Dan Rodrigues (Cumberland, RI) headed in a senior midfielder Brandon Migliore (Coventry, RI) free kick for the decisive marker in the 70th minute to send the Anchormen to the 2008 Little East Conference Menís Soccer Tournament Championship Game in a 2-1 win over Eastern Connecticut on Wednesday night.

Second-seeded RIC (11-5-4) will host fourth-seeded Plymouth State on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 1 p.m. at the RIC Soccer Field. The 24th-ranked Warriors (13-3-3) bow out of the tourney and will have to wait for a possible at-large bid to the 2008 NCAA Div. III Menís Soccer Tournament.

Freshman Forward Bruno Costa

It will be the third time in program history that the Anchormen have reached the LEC tourney final (2004, 2005), while hosting the championship contest for just the second time (2005). The winner receives an automatic bid to the NCAA tourney.

The two teams played a scoreless first half until a flurry of scoring broke out in the 65th minute. RIC freshman forward Bruno Costa (Pawtucket, RI) settled a loose ball and blasted a shot from 35 yards out that eluded ECSU freshman goalkeeper Carl Appel (West Windsor, NJ) to put the Anchormen on top, 1-0.

The lead was short-lived, however, as Eastern Connecticut senior back Kyle Bedini (Manchester, CT) fired a free kick from midfield to net equalizer just 2:04 later in the 67th minute.

Migliore, who scored twice in the Anchormenís, 2-1, overtime win against the Warriors on Oct. 25, set up Rodrigues with a long-range free kick after a Warrior foul 2:46 later.

RIC freshman goalkeeper Justin OíConnor (North Kingstown, RI) made nine saves to raise his record to 9-3-4 on the season. Appel made three saves, while his defense helped out with two more, as his record falls to 13-3-3.

Rhode Island College held a slight advantage in shots, 16-15.
