Anchormen Drop to 7-2

Providence, RI—MIT
sophomore center fielder Brian Doyle (Hopkinton, MA) went
4-for-6 with two runs scored, two RBI and a double, while freshman
Torre Swanson (Redding, CA) earned his first collegiate win
as the Engineers downed Rhode Island College, 14-8, on Tuesday
afternoon at Anchorman Field. |

|
Rhode Island College (7-2) took a 1-0
lead in he bottom of the first inning as junior right fielder
Jared Rossi (Johnston, RI) reached on an error and scored on
senior third baseman Jeff Costa’s (Pawtucket, RI) RBI double. |
|
|
|
|
|
MIT (3-0) took the lead for good with
a three-run outburst in the top of the third. Freshman third baseman
Kenneth Lin (Castro Valley, CA) contributed an RBI single,
while sophomore catcher Dan Hyatt (Wallingford, CT) belted an
RBI double. |
|
|
|
|
|
The Engineers built a 9-1 advantage
by plating six runs in the fifth. Lin and Hyatt did the damage once
again with RBI singles, while MIT also plated runs with a bases
loaded walk and scoring on a wild pitch. |
|
|
|
|
|
RIC came right back with three runs
in the home half of the frame, paced by an RBI fielder’s choice from
junior first baseman Tim Schabowski (Pascoag, RI) and a
two-run blast for his first collegiate homer by sophomore designated
hitter Gary Levesque (East Providence, RI). |

|
MIT quickly put the game out of reach
with four runs to start the sixth inning. Doyle smacked a two-run
double, junior second baseman Stewart Park (Brooklyn, NY)
plated one with a sacrifice fly and senior first baseman Tom
Phillips (Durham, NC) singled in another. |
|
|
|
|
|
The Anchormen scored two runs in both
the seventh and ninth, but could not close the gap. |
|
|
|
|
|
The visitors logged 19 hits and
stranded 13 runners in the victory. Seven Engineers recorded
multiple hits, with Lin (3-for-6) and Hyatt (3-for-5) joining Doyle
as the offensive leaders. Swanson threw five innings to earn the win
(1-0), allowing four runs on six hits and recording three
strikeouts. |

RIC used six pitchers in the game
with sophomore starter Rob Rushton (Freetown, MA) taking the
loss (1-1). Levesque went 3-for-4 with a double, homer, two runs
scored, two RBI and a walk. |

|
|
In upcoming action, Rhode Island
College will host Wheaton on Thursday, March 19 at 3 p.m. The
Engineers will face Wentworth tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 p.m. |
