RIC (10-3) pounded out 21 hits in a
20-3 victory in game one. The hosts plated eight runs in the first
and never looked back. The offense was the story as 10 different
Anchormen recorded a hit, with senior right fielder B.J. Doyon
(Douglas, MA) leading the way with a 4-for-5 performance. He
added four runs scored and three RBI. Senior second baseman
Garrett Grenier (North Smithfield, RI) went 3-for-4 with four RBI, two
runs scored and a double. |

Freshman pitcher Cory Madore
(Carver, MA) earned the win (2-0), allowing two runs on three
hits, to go along with five strikeouts, in four innings of work.
Freshman Andrew McKeon (Johnston, RI) threw the final three
frames. Newbury (1-8) freshman pitcher Alex Chetlat (Farmington,
CT) took the loss (0-2), getting roughed up for 10 runs on seven
hits in two innings of work. Classmate Mike Gulla (Westbury, NY)
didn’t fair much better in relief, surrendering 10 runs on 14 hits
over the final four frames. |

Although Rhode Island College scored
in all but one inning of game two, it was a tightly contested affair
with RIC coming out on top, 10-5. The Anchormen took a 1-0 lead in
the first on an RBI-double from sophomore designated hitter Gary
Levesque (East Providence, RI). The visitors tied the game up in
the second as freshman shortstop Curran Shane (Bedford, NH)
walked with the bases loaded. RIC freshman starter Mike DeWald
(Hope Valley, RI) got out of the jam on a double play grounder. |

The Anchormen went right back on top
in the home half of the inning. Sophomore catcher Justin Corso
(Cranston, RI) contributed an RBI-single, while senior second
baseman Bryan Colombero (Skillman, NJ) plated another with a
sacrifice fly. |

The hosts built a 6-2 advantage in
the third as Corso knocked in one on a single and freshman shortstop
Kyle Allaire (Uxbridge, MA) registered a sacrifice fly. RIC
effectively ended the game in the fifth on a Colombero RBI single
and a two-run double from Schabowski. DeWald earned the win (1-0),
allowing two earned runs on eight hits to go along with three
strikeouts in five innings of work. Newbury freshman pitcher
Jorge Pimentel (Winsted, CT) took the loss (1-1), allowing seven
runs, of which only four were earned, on eight hits in four innings. |
