FLEMING, MANGUM & JACKSON
RECEIVE LITTLE EAST AWARDS

Providence, RI-The Little East Conference honored Rhode Island College senior Kayla Fleming (Pawtucket, RI), freshman Kim Mangum (Warwick, RI) and Head Coach Kevin Jackson for their performance during the 2008-09 women’s indoor track and field season.

 

 

 Senior Kayla Fleming

 

Fleming was named the 2008-09 Little East Conference Women’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Year. She earned All-American honors in the high jump, tying for seventh place with a 1.61-meter effort at the 2009 NCAA Div. III Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Rose Hulman Institute of Technology on Mar. 13-14. Fleming earned All-ECAC honors with an eighth place, 1.57-meter effort in the high jump at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) New England Div. III Championships on March 7. She was the New England Champion in the high jump with a 1.63-meter effort at the N.E. Div. III Championships on Feb. 21. Fleming earned New England Alliance honors in five events at the Alliance Championships on Feb. 14. She placed first in both the high jump (1.60m) and in the 600 meters (1:41.79), second in the 1,000 meters (3:09.01), sixth in the long jump (4.92m) and third as part of the 4x400 meter relay (4:25). She was named the LEC Field Athlete of the Week seven times this winter.

 

 

 Freshman Kim Mangum

 

Mangum shared 2008-09 Little East Conference Women’s Indoor Rookie Field Athlete of the Year honors with Southern Maine’s Bethany Dumas. She earned All-New England honors in the triple jump with a new program record, sixth place (11.05m) effort at the N.E. Div. III Championships on Feb. 21. Magnum earned New England Alliance honors in four events at the Alliance Championships on Feb. 14. She placed first in the long jump (5.11m), second in the triple jump (10.95m), third as part of the 4x200 meter relay (1:53.15) and third as part of the 4x400 meter relay (4:25.69). She was named the LEC Rookie Field Athlete of the Week four times this winter.

 

 

 Head Coach Kevin Jackson

 

Jackson was tabbed as the Little East Conference Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track and Field Coach of the Year. He led Rhode Island College to the program’s second highest finish at the Little East Championship meet—placing second overall with 133 points—since the Anchorwomen hoisted the championship trophy in 2000. This winter, Jackson mentored the program’s first All-American in women’s indoor track and field. He also guided Rhode Island College to a top-15 finish at the New England Division III Championships, placing 14th with 13 points.
