Providence, RIóNo. 23 Rhode Island College raised its overall record to 25-2-1 and stayed unbeaten with a 5-0-1 mark in the Little East Conference with a doubleheader sweep (10-2, 14-0) over UMass Dartmouth in collegiate softball action on Tuesday afternoon at the Dayna A. Bazar Softball Complex. The Corsairs see their records fall to 7-13 and 2-6, respectively.

Rhode Island College raised its current unbeaten streak to 18 games (17-0-1) with the victories. RIC now has 11 shutout wins on the year.

 Sophomore Shortstop Donielle Mattoon

The Anchorwomen took game one, 10-2, in six innings, led by sophomore shortstop Donielle Mattoon (Coventry, RI), who went 3-for-3 with three RBI, two runs scored and clouted her team-leading fourth homer of the season.

RIC put two on the board in the first inning as sophomore catcher Laura Kostenblatt (Keene, NH) knocked in two with a single. UMD sophomore right fielder Ashley Puls (West Springfield, MA) pulled the visitors within a run, 2-1, with an RBI single in the second, only to see the hosts answer back with a Mattoon RBI single up the middle in the home half of the frame.

Once again the Corsairs cut the deficit to a single run as freshman pitcher Brittany Eldridge (Raynham, MA) helped her own cause with an RBI double in the third. The Anchorwomen broke the game open in the bottom of the inning, led by a two-run bomb by Mattoon and an RBI single from sophomore designated player Laura DeNoncour (Johnston, RI). RIC tacked on two more in the fifth and sophomore first baseman Chelsi Panarelli (Shrewsbury, MA) ended the contest early with a sacrifice fly in the sixth.

RIC sophomore starter Melanie Neece (Westfield, MA) allowed two runs on six hits, while striking out six, in five innings to earn her seventh (7-1) win. Sophomore Amanda Berard (Swansea, MA) pitched a scoreless sixth. Eldridge took the loss (4-5), allowing 10 runs, six of which were earned, on 13 hits in 5.1 innings.

The Anchorwomen cruised by the Corsairs, 14-0 (5), helped by four UMD errors, in another shortened contest during the nightcap. Kostenblatt once again got the ball rolling in the first with an RBI single. RIC put up nine runs in the second, paced by an RBI triple from senior center fielder Kelli McCartin (Cranston, RI) and a two-run double by freshman third baseman Cristina Bailey (Londonderry, NH).

RIC added four more runs in the third as Panarelli and freshman designated player Danielle Gorneault (Berlin, CT) knocked in two apiece with a single and double, respectively.

Junior pitcher Jenna Deveines (Lowville, RI) stayed undefeated (11-0), firing a one-hit shutout with six strikeouts. UMD junior starter Alyssa Hosford (Attleboro, MA) took the loss (0-1).

RIC sophomore third baseman/left fielder Kayla Jandreau (Plainville, CT) went 5-for-7 with five runs scored and an RBI in the twinbill. Kostenblatt went 4-for-6 with three RBI and two runs scored.
