TOP-SEEDED ANCHORWOMEN CRUISE BY COLONIALS, 12-5, AT LITTLE EAST TOURNAMENT

Providence, RI—Sophomore shortstop Donielle Mattoon (Coventry, RI) went 3-for-4 with five RBI as top-seeded Rhode Island College defeated fourth-seeded Western Connecticut, 12-5 in game eight of the 2009 Little East Conference Softball Championship Tournament. Both clubs came into the contest with 2-0 marks in the tourney.

The Anchorwomen (39-4) will advance to the Championship Game tomorrow at noon and will await the winner of the Colonials (23-18) vs. second-seeded Keene State elimination game tomorrow morning (10 a.m.) It is a double elimination tournament, which means RIC will need to be beaten twice in a row-something that has not happened to the club all season.

The Anchorwomen jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning. With one down, freshman third baseman Cristina Bailey (Londonderry, NH) singled to left field then advanced to second on a ground out. Senior left fielder Kelli McCartin (Cranston, RI) smashed an RBI single to left field, which plated the hustling Bailey for the game’s first run.

WestConn freshman third baseman Danielle Basciano (Holmes, NY) walked, stole second and scored on freshman right fielder Melissa Fracker’s (Sandy Hook, CT) RBI single in the home half of the second to tie the game.

RIC scored six runs in the third, chasing junior pitcher Kara Cullinane (Lindenhurst, NY) from the game. Sophomore second baseman Amanda Perry (New Bedford, MA) opened the third with a solo homer (5) over the left field fence. Sophomore catcher Kayla Jandreau (Plainville, CT) singled to left field and came home on sophomore designated player Laura Kostenblatt’s (Keene, NH) first career homer (1), a shot to left field.

WestConn would have been out of the jam as Bailey popped out to first for what would have been the third out, but freshman reliever Magen Dargon (Trumbull, CT) was called for an illegal pitch. Bailey worked a walk and junior center fielder Jackie Dube (Barrington, NH) followed with a free pass of her own. Bailey came home on a throwing error, which allowed McCartin to reach. Sophomore shortstop Donielle Mattoon (Coventry, RI) rocketed a shot over the head of Colonial junior center fielder Rebecca Andruskiwec (Orange, CT) for two more runs to make the score 7-1.

RIC lifted sophomore starting pitcher Melanie Neece (Westfield, MA) for junior Jenna Deveines (Lowville, NY) to start the fourth. WestConn loaded the bases as sophomore designated player Gina Facchini (Preston, CT) reached on an error, Basciano walked and Fracker reached on an infield single. Freshman left fielder Jackie Zilnicki (Riverhead, NY) singled up the middle, scoring two, to pull the Colonials within four, 7-3.

Sophomore Brittany Connors (Waterford, CT) came on in relief for WestConn to start the fifth. With two away, McCartin singled and advanced to third as the throw in sailed into the stands. Mattoon made WestConn pay with her third RBI of the contest on a single to center field.

The Anchorwomen added to their lead in the sixth. Junior right fielder Michelle Perrin (Saugus, MA) singled to right and sophomore catcher Laura Kostenblatt (Keene, NH) reached on an error, which allowed both runners to advance to second and third. With one out, WestConn issued a free pass to sophomore first baseman Chelsi Panarelli (Shrewsbury, MA) to load the bases. Sophomore pinch hitter Laura DeNoncour (Johnston, RI) smashed a single to left field to bring in Perrin. After freshman pinch hitter Danielle Gorneault (Berlin, CT) popped out, McCartin drew a walk to bring in Kostenblatt. Mattoon singled in two more runs with a flare to left field.

Basciano and Fracker both singled and were sacrificed over to third and second, respectively. With two down, Zilnicki beat out a grounder to shortstop, which allowed both runs to score and prevent RIC from winning in six innings due to the eight-run rule.

Deveines earned her team-leading 15th (15-0) win. Cullinane took the loss (4-7).

McCartin went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. WCSU’s Fracker went 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI, while Zilnicki went 2-for-3 with three RBI.
