RIAIAW HONORS KAYLA FLEMING

Newport, RI- Rhode Island College senior Kayla Fleming (Pawtucket, RI) received a Distinguished Student-Athlete Award from the Rhode Island Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (RIAIAW) at a banquet hosted by Salve Regina this evening. It is the second consecutive year she has received this honor.

Fleming epitomizes the definition of a student-athlete, succeeding both in the classroom and on the athletic fields. Fleming has been a standout in three sports since transferring to the Anchorwomen in the fall of 2006.

She attained All-American honors in the high jump, tying for seventh overall at the NCAA Div. III Womenís Indoor Track & Field Championships this past March. Over the course over her career, she has earned many New England Alliance, Little East, All-ECAC and All-New England honors. She is the RIC indoor and outdoor record-holder in the high jump.

Fleming was the N.E. Alliance Champion in the high jump in both the indoor and outdoor campaigns this year. She has also provisionally qualified in the high jump for the NCAA Div. III Womenís Outdoor Track & Field Championships coming up later this month.

She recently concluded a three-year career on the pitch for RICís womenís soccer team. Fleming starred as a midfielder her first two years and played defense this past fall. She played in 61 career games, starting 38 of them, totaling 72 shots, five goals and six assists for 18 points. In 2008, Fleming reached career highs in goals (three) and equaled her previous best point total (eight).

Speaker Thomas Murphy and the Rhode Island House of Representatives have twice named her a Distinguished Scholar-Athlete. She is an elementary education major with a concentration in special education and a 2005 graduate of Tolman High School.
