2008-09 Rhode Island College Menís Golf Season Summary
(Overall Record: 3-0)

Providence, R.I.óHead Coach Greg Gammellís team (25-8, .758) finished the 2008-09 season with a 3-0 record. The Anchormen went 3-0 in the fall and competed in several tournaments and invitationals during the spring campaign.

 

Rhode Island College placed second (seven teams) with a score of 648 at the Great Northeast Athletic Conference/Little East Conference Alliance Championship on Oct. 24-25.

 

The Anchormen placed 37th (44 teams) with a score of 691 at the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) Championships on Oct. 20-21.

 

 

 

Senior Lionel Noel (West Warwick, RI) competed in five matches during the fall and averaged a score of 79.8. He shot a season-low score of 76 at the Blazer Invitational on Oct. 17.

 

As a junior in 2007-08, Noel began action in the spring where he competed in six contests and averaged a score of 78.3. He shot a season-low score of 74 twice, in first place finishes during quad-meets against Worcester State, Elms and Wesleyan on May 2 and Johnson and Wales, Wentworth and Newbury on April 18.

 

As a sophomore in 2006-07, he saw action in 12 contests, averaging a score of 79.6. During the fall, he averaged a score of 78.3 in eight matches, while logging an 82.5 average in four contests in the spring. He shot a season-low score of 72, earning medalist honors, at Newbury on Sept. 22. Noel was the medalist at the Wesleyan, Wentworth and Brandeis quad-meet on Oct. 5 with a 75 and again at the Worcester State, Brandeis and Wesleyan quad-meet on Apr. 6 with a score of 76.

 

As a freshman in 2005-06, Noel was named the teamís MVP. He saw action in each of the clubís five matches this spring. He averaged a team-low score of 78.2. Noel was the medalist three times this season, sharing the honor with a score of 80 in the quad-meet with Worcester State, Becker and Brandeis on Apr. 10, and then with a season-low score of 76 in the win at Newbury on Apr. 19 and sharing the honor with a score of 81 in the win over Johnson & Wales on Apr. 21.

 

He is a management major and a 2005 graduate of West Warwick High School.

 

Junior Barrett Kern (Pawtucket, RI) competed in eight contests this season and averaged a score of 86.4. He competed in five matches in the fall, averaging a score of 86.4, while averaging an 86.3 in three contests during the spring. He shot a season-low score of 79 at the Johnson and Wales Invitational on Sept. 19.

 

Sophomore Derek Jensen (Cumberland, RI) competed in all 14 contests this season and averaged a score of 81.3. He competed in eight matches in the fall, averaging a score of 82.4, while averaging an 80.0 in six contests during the spring. He shot a season-low score of 75 during second round play at the Johnson and Wales Invitational on Apr. 19. Jensen was named the team MVP for the second straight year.

 

Sophomore Chad Lareau (North Attleboro, MA) competed in 13 contests this season and averaged a score of 81.5. He competed in seven matches in the fall, averaging a score of 82.3, while averaging an 80.5 in all six contests during the spring. Lareau shared medalist honors when he shot a 79 during a tri-match against Wesleyan and Mitchell on Oct. 15. He shot a season-low score of 73 twice, once during a second place finish in a tri-match against Johnson and Wales and Elms on May 1 and another during second round play at the Johnson and Wales Invitational on Apr. 19.

 

Sophomore Bryan Picinisco (Dartmouth, MA) competed in 12 contests this season and averaged a score of 83.4. He competed in six matches in the fall, averaging a score of 84.4, while averaging an 82.5 in all six contests during the spring. He shot a season-low score of 77 during second round play at the Johnson and Wales Invitational on Apr. 19.

 

Sophomore Steve Zahn (West Warwick, RI) competed in three contests this season and averaged a score of 90.0. He competed in one match in the fall, where he shot a 90.0, and averaged a score of 90.0 in two contests during the spring. He shot a season-low score of 84 during second round play at the Johnson and Wales Invitational on Apr. 19.

 

Freshman Justin Maneca (Greenville, RI) saw action in two spring contests this season and averaged a score of 91.0. He shot a season-low score of 88 at the Worcester State Invitational on Apr. 21.

 

Freshman Mark Savastano (Swansea, MA) competed in nine contests this season and averaged a score of 85.7. He competed in five matches in the fall, averaging a score of 86.0, and also averaged an 85.4 in four contests during the spring. He shot a season-low score of 81 twice, once against Mitchell on Oct. 3 and again on Oct. 17 when he finished in first place at the RIC Invitational.
