2009 Rhode Island College
Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Season Summary

Providence, RI—Head Coach Kevin Jackson was named the Little East Conference Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Coach of the Year. His team closed out the 2009 season seeing one athlete participate at the NCAA Div. III National Championships.

 

 

 

The Anchorwomen tied for 43rd place (56 teams) with a score of 4.0 at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) N.E. Div. III Championships on Thursday and Friday, May 15-16.

 

RIC tied for 29th place (36 teams) with a score of 3.0 at the N.E. Open Championships on Friday and Saturday, May 8-9.

 

The Anchorwomen placed 19th (26 teams) with a score of 7.0 at the N.E. Div. III Championships on Friday and Saturday, May 1-2.

 

RIC placed third overall (11 teams) with 111.5 points and second (six teams) in the Little East Conference with 157.0 points at the N.E. Alliance Championships on April 25.

 

Senior Hannah Clark (Attleboro, MA) placed seventh in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 14:26.23 at the N.E. Alliance Championships on April 25. She placed sixth in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 14:26.72 at the Silfen Invitational on April 18. Clark placed 38th in the 800m with a season-best time of 2:48.70 at the Coast Guard Invitational on April 4. She placed sixth in the 3,000m steeplechase with a program record time of 14:25.86 in the Trinity Invitational on March 28.

 

As a junior in 2008, Clark placed ninth in the 3,000m steeplechase with a program-record time of 16:33.20 at the N.E. Alliance Championships on April 26. She placed sixth in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 16:51.83 at the Silfen Invitational on April 19. Clark placed third in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 17:17.26 in the Swanson Invitational on April 12. She placed 37th in the 800m with a season-best time of 3:08.65 at the Coast Guard Invitational on April 5. Clark placed seventh in the 800m run with a time of 3:15.39 at the RIC Invitational on March 29.

 

As a sophomore in 2007, Clark placed ninth in the 3,000m with a time of 15:22.15 at the N.E. Alliance Championships on Apr. 28. She placed fifth in the 3,000m with a time of 15:31.78 at the Silfen Invitational on Apr. 21. Clark placed 13th in the 800m with a season-best time of 2:57.54 at the Elmer J. Swanson Invitational on Apr. 14. She placed 11th in the 3,000m with a season-best time of 13:40.88 at the Bryant Invitational on Apr. 7. Clark placed 13th in the 800m with a time of 2:58.30 at the RIC Invitational on Mar. 31. She placed 43rd in the 1,500m with a season-best time of 6:16.91 at the Husky Spring Open on Mar. 24.

 

As a freshman in 2006, Clark earned N.E. Alliance honors in the 10,000m, placing fifth with a time of 52:48.31, and as part of the 4x400m relay team, which placed seventh with a time of 4:52.53, at the Alliance Championships on Apr. 29. She placed ninth in the 800m and 15th in the 3,000m with times of 2:52.90 and 13:43.60, respectively, at the Rhode Island College Invitational on Apr. 1. She placed 52nd in the 1,500m with a time of 6:07.14 at the Snowflake Classic on Mar. 25.  

 

Clark is an elementary education major with a concentration in special education and a 2005 graduate of Attleboro High School.

 

Senior Kayla Fleming (Pawtucket, RI) was named the team’s MVP, was selected as the Little East Conference nominee for the 2009 NCAA Woman of the Year Award, as well as, earning the league’s Women’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year award. Fleming tied for 12th overall in the high jump (1.59m) at the 2009 NCAA Div. III Outdoor Track and Field National Championships. She earned All-ECAC honors in the high jump, tying for fourth overall (1.67m) at the ECAC Championships on May 15. She earned All-NEICAAA honors in the high jump with a seventh place (1.59m) effort, while also contributing to a new program record in the 4x400m relay (4:05.22), at the NEICAAA Championships on May 9. Fleming earned All-New England honors in the high jump with a fifth place finish (1.58m) at the N.E. Div. III Championships on May 2. She was the N.E. Alliance Champion in the high jump with a new school record and a season-best 1.70m effort, the 800m with a season-best time of 2:22.21 and as part of the 4x400m relay (4:12.03) at the Alliance Championships on April 25. Fleming also earned N.E. Alliance honors in the long jump, placing sixth with a season-best jump of 4.82m. Fleming placed fifth in the 800m with a time of 2:27.39 and placed first in the high jump (1.60m) at the Silfen Invitational on April 18. She placed first in the high jump (1.60m) at the Wesleyan Invitational on April 11. Fleming placed fifth in the 800m with a time of 2:27.82 and placed first in the high jump (1.68m) at the Coast Guard Invitational on April 4. She placed seventh in the 1,500m with a season-best time of 5:06.55 and placed second in the high jump (1.52m) at the Trinity Invitational on March 28.

 

As a junior in 2008, Fleming earned All-ECAC honors in the high jump with a season-best fourth place, 1.61m leap at the ECAC Div. III Championships on May 16. She placed ninth in the high jump (1.60m) at the N.E. Open Championships on May 9-10. Fleming earned All-New England honors in the high jump (1.55m) with a third place finish at the N.E. Div. III Championships on May 2-3. She earned N.E. Alliance honors in four events at the Alliance Championships on Apr. 26. She placed third in the long jump (4.77m), fourth in the high jump (1.57m) and fifth in the 800m with a season-best time of 2:24.24. Fleming was part of the 4x400m relay team, which placed third with a time of 4:20.25. Fleming placed first in the high jump (1.55m), second in the 800 meters (2:26.79) and sixth in the long jump (4.66m) in the Silfen Invitational on Apr. 19. She placed first in the high jump (1.60 meters) and as part of the 4x400 meter relay team (4:17.36), third in the 1,500 meters (5:11.80) and long jump (4.54m) at the Swanson Invitational on Apr. 12. Fleming placed first in the high jump (1.60m), second in the 800m (2:24.35), and fourth in the long jump with a season-best effort (5.03m) at the Coast Guard Invitational on Apr. 5. She placed first in the long (4.54) and the high jumps (1.52 meters), as well as the 400 meters with a season-best effort (1:03.99), at the RIC Invitational on Mar. 29. Fleming placed fourth in the high jump (1.57m) and fifth in the 1,500 meters with a season-best effort (5:07.08) at the Husky Spring Open on Mar. 22.

 

As a sophomore in 2007, Fleming tied for 14th in the high jump with an effort of 1.59m at the NCAA Div. III Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 24-26. She placed fifth in the high jump with a leap of 1.53m and sixth in the 400m with a season-best time of 1:02.33 at the Last Chance Meet on May 18. Fleming placed second in the high jump with a season-best and new program record leap of 1.67m and 20th in the long jump with a 4.84m effort at the NEICAAA Championships on May 10-12. She earned All-New England honors in the high jump, placing fourth at 1.56m at the N.E. Div. III Championships on May 4-5. She also placed 15th in the long jump at 4.79m at the same meet. Fleming earned N.E. Alliance honors in five events at the Alliance Championships on Apr. 28. She placed eighth as part of the 4x100m relay team with a time of 56.53, first in the 800m with a time of 2:23.83, seventh as part of the 4x400m relay team with a time of 4:37.62, second in the long jump with a season-best distance of 5.13m and first in the high jump with a leap of 1.65m. She placed first in the long jump with a jump of 4.78m, fourth in the high jump with a 1.50m effort and fourth in the 800m with a time of 2:24.14 at the Silfen Invitational on April 21. Fleming placed first in the 800m with a time of 2:25.24, second in the long jump with a leap of 4.70m and third in the high jump with a 1.55m effort at Elmer J. Swanson Invitational on April 14. She placed second in the high jump with a leap of 1.53m and placed fourth in the 1,500m with a time of 5:09.58 at the Bryant University Invitational on April 7. Fleming placed first in the 1,500m, the high jump and long jump with a time of 5:09.40 and efforts of 1.55m and 4.70m, respectively, at the RIC Invitational on Mar. 31. She placed seventh in the high jump with a leap of 1.52m, and eighth in the 1,500m with a time of 4:48.98 at the Husky Spring Open on March 24.

 

Prior to coming to RIC, Fleming attended the University of Hartford in 2005-06. She is an elementary education major with a concentration in special education and a 2005 graduate of Tolman High School.

 

Senior Mary Ellen Horsman (Barrington, RI) placed 17th in the hammer (43.61) at the ECAC Championships on May 15. She placed 20th in the hammer with a season-best throw of 43.32 meters at the NEICAAA Championships on May 9. Horsman earned All-New England honors in the hammer with a sixth place finish (44.25m) at the N.E. Div. III Championships on May 2.  She was the N.E. Alliance Champion in the hammer (44.74m) at the Alliance Championships on April 25. Horsman placed first in the hammer (41.10m) in the Wesleyan Invitational on April 11. She placed first in the hammer (42.44m) at the Coast Guard Invitational on April 4. Horsman placed first in the hammer (43.20m) at the Trinity Invitational on March 28.

 

As a junior in 2008, Horsman placed 17th in the hammer with a throw of 42.66m at the ECAC Championships on May 16th. She placed ninth in the hammer with a distance of 42.48m at the N.E. Open Championships on May 10. Horsman earned All-New England honors in the hammer with a seventh place (40.64m) effort at the N.E. Div. III Championships on May 1-3. She was the N.E. Alliance Champion in the hammer with a first place, season-best (43.55m) effort at the Alliance Championships on Apr. 26. Horsman placed second in the hammer with a distance of 41.62m at the Silfen Invitational on Apr. 19. She placed first in the hammer with a distance of 43.38m at the Swanson Invitational on Apr. 12. Horsman placed first in the hammer with a distance of 41.61m at the RIC Invitational on Mar. 29. She placed fifth in the hammer with a throw of 42.07m at the Husky Spring Open on Mar. 22.

 

As a sophomore in 2007, Horsman placed 17th in the hammer with a throw of 43.34m at the NEICAAA Championships on May 10-12. She earned All-New England honors in the hammer, placing seventh at 43.59m at the N.E. Div. III Championships on May 4-5. Horsman earned N.E. Alliance honors in the hammer, placing first with a season-best distance of 44.05m at the Alliance Championships on Apr. 28. She placed first in the hammer with a throw of 43.99m at the Silfen Invitational on Apr. 21. Horsman placed first in the hammer with a throw of 41.53m at the Elmer J. Swanson Invitational on April 14. She placed first in the hammer with a throw of 43.65m at the Bryant Invitational on Apr. 7. Horsman placed first in the hammer with a throw of 42.34m at the RIC Invitational on Mar. 31.

 

As a freshman in 2006, Horsman placed 19th in the hammer with a distance of 42.21m at the ECAC Championships on May 19. Horsman earned All-New England honors in the hammer, placing fifth with a distance of 44.83m at the N.E. Div. III Championships on May 6. She earned N.E. Alliance honors in the hammer, placing second with a distance of 42.85m at the Alliance Championships on Apr. 29. She placed fourth in the hammer with a distance of 42.46m at the Silfen Invitational on Apr. 22. Horsman placed third in the hammer with a distance of 43.86m at the Solomon Husky Invitational on Apr. 15. She placed third in the hammer with a distance of 38.94m at the Bryant Invitational on Apr. 8. She placed first in the hammer and ninth in the discus with distances of 40.10m and 17.00m, respectively, at the Rhode Island College Invitational on Apr. 1. Horsman placed third in the hammer with a distance of 42.81m at the Snowflake Classic on Mar. 25.

 

Horsman is a nursing major with a minor in psychology a 2005 graduate of Barrington High School.

 

Junior Stephanie Bucci (Smithfield, RI) placed 10th in the hammer with a season-best effort (42.88m) and placed 16th in the discus with a season-best performance (32.68m) at the N.E. Div. III Championships on May 2. She earned N.E. Alliance honors in the hammer and discus, placing third (42.07m) and fourth (32.46m), respectively, at the Alliance Championships on April 25. Bucci placed second in the hammer (37.44m), first in the shot with a season-best distance (10.24m) and first in the discus (28.06m) at the Wesleyan Invitational on April 11. She placed fourth in the shot (9.66m), sixth in the discus (30.33m) and second in the hammer (41.00m) at the Coast Guard Invitational on April 4. Bucci placed third in the hammer with a throw of 40.95m, 14th in the shot with a throw of 9.74m and 14th in the discus with a throw of 29.93m at the Trinity Invitational on March 28.

 

Junior Brooke Iby (Dracut, MA) placed 21st in the triple jump (9.91m) and 21st in the 400m (1:02.11) at the N.E. Div. III Championships on May 2. She was the New England Alliance Champion as part of the 4x400m relay with a season-best time of 4:12.03. She also earned N.E. Alliance honors in three additional events, placing third in both the triple jump with a season-best jump of 10.88m and as part of the 4x100m relay with a season-best time of 51.93, and fourth in the 400m (1:02.28) at the Alliance Championships on April 25. Iby placed fifth in the 200m with a time of 28.20 and second in the 400m with a season-best time of 1:00.83 at the Silfen Invitational on April 18. She placed fourth in the 100m with a season-best time of 13.55, third in the 200m with a season-best time of 28.63 and first in the triple jump (10.41m) at the Wesleyan Invitational on April 11. Iby placed second in the triple jump (10.46m) and fifth in the 400m (1:02.95) in the Coast Guard Invitational on April 4. She placed third in the triple jump (10.51m) and 11th in the preliminaries of the 100m (13.86) at the Trinity Invitational on March 28.

 

Junior Ashley Nyzio (Pawtucket, RI) placed 17th in the javelin (34.05m) at the NEICAAA Championships on May 9. She placed 12th in the javelin (31.81m) at the N.E. Alliance Championships on April 25. Nyzio placed first in the javelin (37.81m) at the Coast Guard Invitational on April 4. She placed first in the javelin with a season-best throw of 38.00m at the Trinity Invitational on March 28.

 

Sophomore Katie Desrosiers (Warwick, RI) placed 12th in the 1,500m with a season-best time of 5:25.22 at the Alliance Championships on April 25.  She placed third in the 800m hurdles with a time of 2:43.36 at the Wesleyan Invitational on April 11. Desrosiers placed 20th in the 1,500m with a season-best time of 5:26.00 at the Coast Guard Invitational on April 4. She placed 33rd in the 800m with a season-best time of 2:41.86 at the Trinity Invitational on March 28.

 

Sophomore Kayla DiBlasi (Smithfield, RI) placed 16th in the preliminaries of the 100m hurdles (16.74) at the ECAC Championship on May 15. DiBlasi placed 16th and 21st, respectively, in the preliminaries of both the 100m (16.59) and 400m hurdles (1:07.77) at the NEICAAA Championships on May 9. She placed 10th in the 100m hurdles with a time of 16.41 at the N.E. Div. III Championships on May 2. DiBlasi was the N.E. Alliance Champion in the 400m hurdles with a season-best time of 1:07.42 and as part of the 4x400m relay (4:12.03). She also earned N.E. Alliance honors in two additional events, placing third in both the 100m hurdles with a season-best time of 16.24 and as part of the 4x100m relay with a season-best time of 51.93 at the Alliance Championships on April 25. She placed second in the 100m hurdles with a time of 16.40 and first in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:08.15 at the Silfen Invitational on April 18.  DiBlasi placed first in the 100m hurdles with a time of 16.81 at the Wesleyan Invitational on April 11. She placed first in the 100m hurdles with a time of 16.81 and second in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:09.48 at the Coast Guard Invitational on April 4. DiBlasi placed fourth in the 100m hurdles with a time of 16.86 and third in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:09.57 at the Trinity Invitational on March 28.

 

Sophomore Denise McCann (West Greenwich, RI) placed 24th in the 100m with a season-best time of 14.66 and 27th in the 200m with a season-best time (30.32) at the Coast Guard Invitational on April 4. She placed 34th in the 200m with a time of 31.07 and 23rd in the preliminaries of the 100m (15.27) at the Trinity Invitational on March 28.

 

Sophomore Caitlin Murphy (Rehoboth, MA) placed 41st in the 800m with a time of 2:51.39 at the Coast Guard Invitational on April 4. She placed 36th in the 800m with a season-best time of 2:49.86 at the Trinity Invitational on March 28.

 

Sophomore Jamie Nunes (Lincoln, RI) placed 13th in the preliminaries of the 100m hurdles with a season-best time of 16.77 at the N.E. Div. III Championships on May 2. She earned N.E. Alliance honors in the 100m hurdles, placing fifth with a time of 16.89 at the Alliance Championships on April 25. Nunes placed third in the 100m hurdles with a time of 16.79 at the Silfen Invitational on April 18. She placed second in the 100m hurdles with a time of 16.86 and fourth in the pole vault with a season-best jump of 2.00m at the Wesleyan Invitational on April 11. Nunes placed second in the 100m hurdles with a time of 16.98 at the Coast Guard Invitational on April 4. She placed fifth in the 100m hurdles with a time of 17.25 at the Trinity Invitational on March 28.

 

Sophomore Nicole Poirier (Concord, MA) placed 10th in the 5,000m with a time of 22:41.72 at the New England Alliance Championships on April 25.  She placed fifth in the 5,000m with a season-best time of 21:51.07 and 10th in the 1,500m with a time of 5:51.01 at the Silfen Invitational on April 18. Poirier placed 33rd in the 1,500m with a season-best time of 5:47.46 at the Coast Guard Invitational on April 4.

 

Freshman Nicole Gelinas (Dayville, CT) earned N.E. Alliance honors as part of the 4x100m relay, which placed third with a season-best time of 51.93, as well as, placing 11th in the pole vault (2.22m) at the New England Championships on April 25.  She placed third in the pole vault with a season-best effort of 2.29m at the Silfen Invitational on April 18. Gelinas placed ninth in the 100m with a season-best time of 15.14, 11th in the 200m with a time of 31.28 and was third in the pole vault (2.15m) at the Wesleyan Invitational on April 11. She placed 28th in the 200m with a season-best time of 30.55 at the Coast Guard Invitational on April 4. Gelinas placed 35th in the 200m with a time of 31.74 and 24th in the preliminaries of the 100m (15.31) at the Trinity Invitational on March 28.

 

Freshman Molly Gouveia (Warwick, RI) placed 18th in the hammer (29.16m), 22nd in the discus with a season-best throw of 22.60m and 19th in the shot (8.39m) at the N.E. Alliance Championships on April 25. She placed fourth in the hammer (26.23m), second in both the shot (8.28m) and discus (21.22m) at the Wesleyan Invitational on April 11. Gouveia placed fifth in the shot with a season-best throw of 8.95m, 17th in the discus (19.15m) and fifth in the hammer with a season-best throw of 31.55m at the Coast Guard Invitational on April 4. She placed 19th in the shot (8.58m) at the Trinity Invitational on March 28.

 

Freshman Alexzandra Hays (Chepachet, RI) earned N.E. Alliance honors in the shot, placing sixth with a throw of 10.37m, as well as, placing 17th in the javelin (23.92m) at the Alliance Championships on April 25. She placed ninth in the javelin with a season-best throw of 25.74, 10th in the shot with a season-best throw (10.47m) and 13th in the discus with a season-best throw of 30.20m at the Trinity Invitational on March 28.

 

Freshman Jessica Lane (Clinton, CT) placed 23rd in the long jump (4.05m) and 15th in the triple jump with a season-best effort of 9.33m at the N.E. Alliance Championships on April 25. Lane placed 11th in the long jump (4.64m) at the Silfen Invitational on April 18. She placed sixth in the long jump with a season-best leap of 4.37m and third in the triple jump (9.21m) at the Wesleyan Invitational on April 11.

 

Freshman Kim Mangum (Warwick, RI) placed 13th in the triple jump (10.92m) at the ECAC Championships on May 15. She earned All-NEICAAA honors with an eighth place, season-best, program-record 11.20m effort in the triple jump, as well as, setting a new school record in the 4x400m relay, placing 12th with a season-best time of 4:05.22 at the NEICAAA Championships on May 9. Mangum earned All-New England honors in the long jump, placing eighth with a season-best effort (5.19m), as well as, placing 15th in the triple jump (10.47m) at the N.E. Div. III Championships on May 2. She was the New England Alliance Champion as part of the 4x400m relay (4:12.03), while also earning N.E. Alliance honors in three additional events, placing second in the triple jump (10.92m), third as part of the 4x100m relay (51.93) and fourth in the long jump (4.86m) at the Alliance Championships on April 25. Mangum placed 12th in the 100m with a time of 14.23 and third in the high jump (1.40m) at the Silfen Invitational on April 18. She placed sixth in the 100m with a season-best time of 13.91 and first in the long jump (4.97m) at the Wesleyan Invitational on April 11. Mangum placed 19th in the 200m with a season-best time of 29.00, second in the long jump (4.55m) and first in the triple jump (10.61m) at the Coast Guard Invitational on April 4. She placed second in the long jump with a jump of 4.92m and first in the triple jump (11.10m) at the Trinity Invitational on March 28.

 

Freshman Merylda Nogueira (Pawtucket, RI) placed 13th in the triple jump with a season-best jump of 9.35m and 20th in the long jump (4.12m) at the New England Alliance Championships on April 25. She placed seventh in the long jump with a season-best effort (4.17m) and fourth in the triple jump (9.05m) at the Wesleyan Invitational on April 11. Nogueira placed 13th in the long jump (4.05m) and 12th in the triple jump (9.03m) at the Trinity Invitational on March 28.
