BATES DOWNS ANCHORWOMEN, 58-39
Abrahamson & Malec Pace Anchorwomen at Salem State Tourney

 

Salem, MAŚRhode Island College junior forward Ashley Abrahamson (Raynham, MA) and freshman guard Stephanie Coro (North Providence, RI) led the Anchorwomen with 12 and 11 points, respectively, in a 58-39 loss to Bates in opening round action of the Salem State Tip-Off Tournament on Friday afternoon.

 

 

 

RIC drops to 1-2 overall, while the Bobcats earn their first win of the season. The Anchorwomen will face the loser of the Emerson vs. Salem State game (6 p.m.) tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. in the consolation contest.

 

 

 

Both teams struggled in the first half, with Rhode Island College shooting 21 percent (6-for-28) from the field and 27 percent (3-for-11) from three-point range. Bates shot 26 percent (11-for-43) from the floor through the first 20 minutes and took a 30-17 lead into intermission. The second half was much closer as the Bobcats edged the Anchorwomen by six points, 28-22, to pick up the victory.

 

 

 

Neither team had a good shooing day as Bates finished at 30 percent (21-for-70), while RIC registered 25 percent (14-for-56).

 

RIC junior forward Cassi Malec (Johnston, RI) chipped in with eight points, eight rebounds and two steals.

 

Bates senior forward Val Beckwith (Woburn, MA) led all players with a double-double effort of 16 points and 14 rebounds, to go along with three assists and three steals.
