MARTINI & SUTHERLAND CAPTURE INDIVIDUAL N.E. CHAMPIONSHIPS
Anchormen Place Third Overall

Springfield, MA-Rhode Island College senior Mike Martini (Cranston, RI) and sophomore Kevin Sutherland (Dauphin, PA) captured individual titles at the 31st annual New England Wrestling Association Championships, hosted by Springfield College on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 21-22.

 

The duo will head to Cedar Rapids, Iowa to take part in the NCAA Div. III Wrestling Championships beginning on Friday, Mar. 6.

 

The Anchormen placed third (15 teams) with a team score of 96. Williams won the championship with a score of 136.5, while Johnson & Wales finished second at 106.5. In addition to Martini and Sutherland, four additional Anchormen achieved All-New England status.

 

 

 Senior 157 lbs. Mike Martini

 

Martini wins the New England title at 157 lbs. and heads to the NCAAs for the second consecutive season. As the top seed, he went a perfect 5-0 on the weekend and defeated Springfield's Rob Mifsud in the finals, 11-6. Martini achieved his 100th career win with a 10-6 decision over Williams' Carl Breitenstein in the semifinals. He is 36-3 on the season.

 

 

 Sophomore 149 lbs. Kevin Sutherland

 

Sutherland was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the New England Wrestling Association Championship. He wins the New England title at 149 lbs. and heads to the NCAAs for the first time in his career. Sutherland went undefeated with a 5-0 record at the meet and defeated Bridgewater State's Frank Cammisa, 3-1, in sudden victory in the championship match. He had previously betean the Bears' senior, 8-5 in the semi-finals. Cammisa had defeated Sutherland, 1-0, a week earlier in the two club's final regular season meeting. Sutherland is currently 40-10 on the season.

 

 

 Junior 174 lbs. Joe Manley

 

Junior Joe Manley (Wayland, MA) earned All-New England honors, placing third at 174 lbs. He went 4-2 on the weekend, ending his season with a 23-11 record. Manley recorded the fastest pin of the tourney, winning by fall in just 17 seconds vs. Southern Maine's Larry Coughlin.

 

 

 Senior 184 lbs. Nick Logan

 

Senior Nick Logan (Lowell, MA) earned All-New England honors for the second consecutive year, placing third at 184 lbs. He went 2-2 on the weekend, ending his season with a 29-10 record.

 

 

 Junior 197 lbs. Ray Moore

 

Junior Ray Moore (Wrentham, MA) earned All-New England honors, placing fifth at 197 lbs. He went 4-2 on the weekend, ending his season with a 15-11 record.

 

 

 Freshman 133 lbs. Scott Legacy

 

Freshman Scott Legacy (Bennington, VT) earned All-New England honors, placing fifth at 133 lbs. He went 3-2 on the weekend, ending his season with a 30-11 record.
