RIC COMES BACK FROM FIRST HALF DEFICIT
TO HAND PANTHERS FIRST LEC LOSS

 

Providence, RI—The Rhode Island College men’s basketball team handed Plymouth State its first Little East Conference loss in a 78-61 win Saturday afternoon at The Murray Center. Senior guard Bobby Bailey (Fall River, MA) scored a game-high 14 points to pace four Anchormen in double figures in scoring.

The Anchormen (8-3, 2-1) win their third straight game, while the Panthers (5-8, 2-1) lose for the third time in four contests.

 

 

 

PSU built an early seven-point advantage, 30-23, with 5:21 left in the half. Rhode Island College used a 13-6 run to close out the first stanza and enter halftime knotted up, 36-36.

 

 

 

Senior guard Cameron Stewart (Newport, RI) gave the Anchormen the lead for good, 47-45, on a three-pointer with 15:02 remaining in the second half. The basket sparked an 8-0 run and the RIC lead ballooned to a game-high 24 points, 75-51, at 5:29. The Anchormen held Plymouth State to just 35 percent shooting (9-for-26) and scored 11 points off of 12 Panther turnovers over the final 20 minutes

 

 

 

Bailey scored 10 of his 14 points in the second half, while freshman forward Mason Choice (Newport, RI) was 8-for-8 from the free throw line and scored 12 points. Senior center Wil Lyons (Warwick, RI) and sophomore guard Antone Gray (Providence, RI) rounded out the Anchormen contingent with 10 points apiece. Sophomore forward Darius Debnam (Mattapan, MA) was one point shy of double figures and also pulled in a team-high seven rebounds.

 

 

Junior guard Jason O’Keefe (Everett, MA) led Plymouth State with 13 points. Junior forwards Mike Chergey (Bow, NH) and Bryan Tracy (Manchester, NH) each scored 10 points. Sophomore forward Tom Dowd (Portsmouth, NH) grabbed nine of his game-high 10 rebounds on the defensive end.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will continue the Little East Conference circuit on Tuesday, Jan. 13 when the Anchormen square off against Southern Maine.
