The Anchormen placed second amongst the 15-team field with a 3-1 record on the day.

The Wildcats, who downed RIC in last year’s finals as well, and the Anchormen came into the title match with identical 3-0 records on the day. JWU was ranked second, while RIC held down the fifth spot, as of last week’s NEWA Coaches Poll.

Rhode Island College took and early, 8-3, lead as second-ranked freshman Scott Legacy (Bennington, VT) picked up a technical fall victory at 133 lbs. and classmate third-ranked 141 lbs. Mike Trasso (Lyndhurst, NJ) followed with a 6-3 decision over Andrew Van Dyk. Johnson and Wales came back to take a one point, 9-8, lead with back-to-back wins at 149 and 157 lbs. RIC 157 lbs. top-ranked senior Mike Martini (Cranston, RI) bumped up one weight class to 165 lbs. and defeated Skylar Engelken, 3-0, to give RIC its final lead, 11-9. JWU’s top-ranked grappler Jerome Owens won at 174 lbs. and was followed by second-ranked Bryan Lenhardt’s victory at 184 lbs. to give the Wildcats an 18-11 lead. RIC junior Ray Moore (Wrentham, MA) and freshman Richard Wapenyi (Bridgewater, MA) won at 197 and 285 lbs., respectively, but were unable to earn major victories to close the gap.

In the opening round, RIC defeated MIT, 36-10, for the second time this season. After falling at 125 lbs., the Anchormen reeled off wins in each of the next seven weight classes to take a lead they would never relinquish. Legacy pinned the eight-ranked grappler in his weight class, Greg Wellman, at 4:01. Martini bumped up once again and earned a major win, 12-1, over Hank Peppe.

Rhode Island College advanced to take on fourth-ranked Roger Williams and handled the Hawks, 34-7.  RIC won eight of the 10 bouts, including the first five (125-157 lbs.). Legacy pinned Andrew Jackson (6:42) and junior Joe Manley (Wayland, MA) pinned Chris Nadeau (1:33) at 174 lbs.

That set up a bout with top-ranked Williams. The Anchormen won six of the first eight matches en route to a 23-17 win. Sophomore top-ranked 149 lbs. Kevin Sutherland (Dauphin, PA) defeated second-ranked Dylan Rittenburg, 5-2, and Martini downed second-ranked Carl Breitenstein, 4-2, to secure their holds on the top spots in the NEWA rankings. A Manley pin at 174 lbs. and a 9-0 major victory by senior Nick Logan (Lowell, MA) at 184 lbs. sealed the match.

Martini went 4-0 to raise his personal record to 23-2. Legacy also sported a 4-0 mark to up his record to 19-8.
