NINTH STRAIGHT WIN

Anchormen Roll Past Roger Williams, 66-50

 

Bristol, RIóSenior forward Kaseem Johnson (New Haven, CT) narrowly missed a double-double with a game-high 13 points and nine rebounds, while classmate guard Bobby Bailey (Fall River, MA) chipped in with a 10-point effort, as No. 25 Rhode Island College cruised past Roger Williams, 66-50, in an Ocean State men's basketball game on Thursday night.

The Anchormen (18-4) complete their sweep of Rhode Island Div. III opposition, having previously defeated Johnson & Wales and Salve Regina on the season. The Hawks see their record fall to 9-13 in the loss.

 

 

 

Rhode Island College opened up a 13-0 lead, holding Roger Williams scoreless for the first 7:22 of the game. Sophomore guard Antone Gray (Providence, RI) scored five points during the run, while senior backcourt mate Cameron Stewart (Newport, RI) capped the outburst with a three-pointer at 12:58.

 

 

 

After five straight points by the hosts, the Anchormen quickly extended their advantage to 16 points, 21-5, with an 8-0 run culminating with two free throws by senior center Wil Lyons (Warwick, RI) with 7:54 left in the first half. RIC kept up a double-digit lead for the rest of the period and took a 33-20 lead into halftime.

 

 

 

The visitors increased their advantage back up to 16 points, 40-24, with a Johnson layup with 17:02 left in the game. Roger Williams eventually trimmed the deficit down to four points, 48-44, on a Tucker Bashaw jumper at 7:54, but the Anchormen responded with an 18-6 run down the stretch to secure the win.

 

 

 

Lyons finished with nine points and six rebounds, while Gray contributed eight points.

 

 

 

Bashaw and Taylor Petruccelli led the Hawks with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

 

 

 

RIC shot 44 percent (21-for-48) from the field and struggled from the free throw line with a 59-percent (19-for-32) effort.

 

 

 

RWU shot just 34 percent (19-for-56) from the field.

 

 

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will resume the Little East Conference schedule with a game at Southern Maine on Saturday, Feb. 14.
