FLEMING CAPTURES NEW ENGLAND CHAMPIONSHIP IN THE HIGH JUMP

Waterville, ME-Rhode Island College senior Kayla Fleming (Pawtucket, RI) captured the New England Championship in the high jump at the New England Div. III Championships, hosted by Bowdoin on Saturday afternoon.

RIC finished 14th (24 teams) with 13.0 points. MIT won the meet with a score of 134.

 

Fleming finished first in the high jump with a 1.63-meter effort amongst a field of 17 competitors. She also placed 12th in the 600 meters with a new program-record time of 1:42.46 and 11th as part of the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 4:16.72.

 

Freshman Kim Mangum (Providence, RI) earned All-New England honors in the triple jump with a new program record, sixth place (11.05m) effort, 23rd in the long jump (4.63m), 11th as part of the 4x400 meter relay (4:16.72) and 13th as part of the 4x200 meter relay (1:53.98). Her mark in the triple jump surpasses her previous RIC-record effort of 10.98m set at the URI Invitational on Jan. 31.

 

Junior Brooke Iby (Dracut, MA) placed ninth in the triple jump (10.64m), 24th in the 400 meters (1:04.31), 11th as part of the 4x400 meter relay (4:16.72) and 13th as part of the 4x200 meter relay (1:53.98)

 

Junior Stephanie Bucci (Smithfield, RI) placed 18th in the shot (10.44m) and 10th in the weight throw (13.34m).

 

Senior Mary Ellen Horsman (Barrington, RI) placed 12th in the weight throw (13.18m).

 

Sophomore Kayla DiBlasi (Smithfield, RI) placed 14th in the preliminaries of the 55 meter hurdles (9.36), 11th as part of the 4x400 meter relay (4:16.72) and 13th as part of the 4x200 meter relay (1:53.98).

 

Sophomore Jamie Nunes (Lincoln, RI) placed 11th in the preliminaries of the 55 meter hurdles (9.31). Freshman Jessica Lane (Clinton, CT) placed 13th as part of the 4x200 meter relay (1:53.98).

 

In upcoming action, RIC will compete at the New England Open Championships, hosted by Boston University on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 27-28.
