RIC WRESTLING WINDS UP DAY ONE
AT NEWA CHAMPIONSHIPS

Springfield, MA-Rhode Island College finished the first day of action at the 31st annual New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Championships, hosted by Springfield College. Head Coach Jay Jones' Anchormen currently stand at second place with 89.0 points. RIC trails Williams by (109.5) 20.5 points, while Johnson and Wales is currently in third (81.5) just 7.5 points behind.

 

 

 Senior 157 lbs. Mike Martini

 

Five RIC wrestlers have advanced to the semifinals matches of their respective weight classes. 

 

 

Freshman Mike Trasso (Lyndhurst, NJ) is 2-0 at 141 lbs. and will face Trinity's Jacob Gire tomorrow, a wrestler he has yet to face this season.

 

Sophomore Kevin Sutherland (Dauphin, PA) is 2-0 at 149 lbs. and will face Williams' Dylan Rittenburg tomorrow. Sutherland is 3-0 vs. Rittenburg this season, having earned a 4-3 tie-breaker decision and a pair of 5-2 wins.

 

Senior Mike Martini (Cranston, RI) is 2-0 at 157 lbs. and will face WPI's Tyler Howe tomorrow. Martini is 2-0 vs. Howe on the season, having earned 4-0 and 9-3 decisions.

 

Junior Joe Manley (Wayland, MA) is 2-0 at 174 lbs. and will face the No. 1-ranked wrestler in the nation, Johnson & Wales' Jerome Owens, tomorrow. Manley is 0-2 this year against Owens, having been pinned (4:02) and lost a technical fall (19-4) bout.

 

Senior Nick Logan (Lowell, MA) is 1-0, after receiving a bye, at 184 lbs. and will face Springfield's Greg Dussol tomorrow. Logan earned a 2-1, tie-breaker decision vs. Dussol earlier this winter.
