SIX RIC WRESTLERS HONORED
BY PILGRIM LEAGUE

Providence, RI-Six Rhode Island College wrestlers were honored by the Pilgrim Wrestling League for their performance this past season. Three Anchormen were named First Team All-Stars, while two others garnered Second Team and Honorable Mention awards, respectively. Two grapplers were named to the Scholar-Athlete All-Star Team.

 

 

 Freshman 133 lbs. Scott Legacy

 

Freshman Scott Legacy (Bennington, VT) shared First Team All-Star honors at 133 lbs. with Bridgewater State freshman Kenny Francis. He earned All-New England honors, placing fifth at the New England Wrestling Association Championships on Feb. 22. Legacy was 30-11 with 14 pins, 54 takedowns, 10 reversals and 26 near-falls on the season. He placed third at both the Roger Williams (Nov. 15) and Doug Parker (Nov. 22) Invitationals, while logging a fourth place finish at the RIT Invitational (Dec. 6).

 

 

 Freshman 141 lbs. Mike Trasso

 

Freshman Mike Trasso (Lyndhurst, NJ) was named a First Team All-Star at 141 lbs. He was 23-9 with five pins, 49 takedowns, nine reversals and 14 near-falls on the season. Trasso placed second at the Roger Williams Invitational (Nov. 15), and fourth at both the Doug Parker (Nov. 22) and RIT Invitationals (Dec. 6).

 

 

 Sophomore 149 lbs. Kevin Sutherland

 

Sophomore Kevin Sutherland (Dauphin, PA) was named a First Team All-Star at 149 lbs. He was the New England Champion and advanced to the NCAA National Championships. Sutherland, a NWCA Scholar All-American, was also selected to the Pilgrim League’s Scholar-Athlete All-Star Team. He attained All-New England status for the second consecutive season, finishing with a 41-12 overall record to go along with one pin, 86 takedowns, seven reversals and 22 near-falls. Sutherland earned a third place finish at the Doug Parker Invitational (Nov. 22) and a fourth place finish at the RIT Invitational (Dec. 6).

 

 

 Junior 174 lbs. Joe Manley

 

Junior Joe Manley (Wayland, MA) was named a Second Team All-Star at 174 lbs. He earned All-New England honors at the NEWA Championships on Feb. 22 with a fifth place finish. Manley was 23-11 with 10 pins, 31 takedowns, seven reversals and 14 near-falls on the season.

 

 

 Senior 157 lbs. Mike Martini

 

Senior Mike Martini (Cranston, RI) was an Honorable Mention to the Pilgrim League All-Star Team. He was the New England Champion at 157 lbs. and advanced to the NCAA Championships for the second consecutive season. Martini was 37-5 with five pins, 75 takedowns, 22 reversals and 16 near-falls on the season. He placed first at both the Roger Williams (Nov. 15) and Doug Parker (Nov. 22) Invitationals, while finishing third at the RIT Invitational (Dec. 6).

 

 

 Sophomore 141 lbs. Travis Drappi

 

Sophomore Travis Drappi (West Orange, NJ) was named to the Pilgrim League’s Scholar-Athlete All-Star Team. He was 16-14 with four pins, 37 takedowns, seven reversals and seven near-falls on the season. He placed fifth at 141 lbs. at the Roger Williams Invitational (Nov. 15) and sixth at the RIT Invitational (Dec. 6).

 

Head Coach Jay Jones’ team finished the season with a third place finish at the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Championships on Feb. 22. RIC posted a 17-6-1 overall record, a 12-3-1 record against NEWA competition and a 4-2 mark in the Pilgrim Wrestling League.
