2008-09 Rhode Island College

Wrestling Season Summary
(17-6-1 Overall; 12-3-1 in the NEWA; 4-2 in the Pilgrim League)

Providence, RI—Head Coach Jay Jones’ (Career record: 133-89-1, .599) team finished the 2008-09 season with a 17-6-1 overall record, a 12-3-1 mark against New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) and a 4-2 mark in the Pilgrim League.

 

 

 

Rhode Island College placed third (15 teams) at the 2009 New England Wrestling Association Championships, hosted by Springfield on Feb. 21-22. RIC had two individuals capture N.E. titles, while six wrestlers attained All-N.E. status. Two Anchormen advanced to compete at the 2009 NCAA Div. III Wrestling Championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

 

During the season, RIC earned fourth place finishes at the Roger Williams Invitational (Nov. 15), Doug Parker Invitational (Nov. 22) and the RIT Invitational (Dec. 6).

 

Senior Nick Logan (Lowell, MA) wrapped up his four-year career on the mat with a record of 88-39 (.693) to go along with 177 takedowns, 25 reversals, 71 escapes, 47 near-falls and 33 pins.

 

As a senior in 2008-09, Logan earned All-New England honors at 184 lbs., for the second consecutive year, placing third overall at the NEWA Championships. He was 29-10 with 45 takedowns, 10 reversals, 14 escapes, 15 near-falls and 13 pins. He placed second at both the Roger Williams (Nov. 15) and Doug Parker (Nov. 22) Invitationals, while finishing first at the RIT Invitational (Dec. 6).

 

As a junior in 2007-08, Logan earned All-New England honors at 184 lbs., placing fourth overall at the NEWA Championships. He was 31-9 at 184 lbs. to go along with 75 takedowns, four reversals, 20 escapes, 17 near-falls and 13 pins. He placed fifth at the Roger Williams Invitational (Nov. 10), third at the Doug Parker Invitational (Nov. 17) and first at the R.I.T. Invitational (Dec. 1).

 

As a sophomore in 2006-07, Logan was 20-13 at 184 lbs. with 73 points, 44 takedowns, nine reversals, 26 escapes, eight near-falls and two pins. He placed fourth at 184 lbs. at the Roger Williams Invitational and fifth at 184 lbs. at the Doug Parker Invitational.

 

As a freshman in 2005-06, Logan was 8-7 at 174 lbs. with 40 points, 13 takedowns, two reversals, 11 escapes, seven near-falls and five pins.

 

He is a physical education major and a 2005 graduate of Lowell High School.

 

Senior Mike Martini (Cranston, RI) wrapped up his three-year career on the mat with a record of 102-23 (.816) to go along with 174 takedowns, 51 reversals, 111 escapes, 47 near-falls and 16 pins. Although he has one year of eligibility remaining, Martini is on track to graduate.

 

As a senior in 2008-09, was the New England Champion at 157 lbs, earning All-New England honors for the third straight season, and advanced to the NCAA Championships for the second consecutive campaign. Martini was 37-5 with 75 takedowns, 22 reversals, 27 escapes, 16 near-falls and five pins on the season. He placed first at both the Roger Williams (Nov. 15) and Doug Parker (Nov. 22) Invitationals, while finishing third at the RIT Invitational (Dec. 6). Martini was an Honorable Mention to the Pilgrim League All-Star Team and named team MVP.

 

As a junior in 2007-08, Martini was the New England Champion, earning All-New England honors for the second consecutive season, at 157 lbs. and advanced to the NCAA Div. III Wrestling Championships. He was named a Second Team Pilgrim Wrestling League All-Star. Martini finished the season with a 34-9 record, 57 takedowns, 15 reversals, 42 escapes, 19 near-falls and eight pins on the season. He earned a fourth place finish at the Roger Williams Invitational (Nov. 10), was fourth at the Doug Parker Invitational (Nov. 17) and first at the R.I.T. Invitational (Dec. 1). Martini was named a Scholar All-American by NWCA.

 

As a sophomore in 2006-07, Martini earned All-New England honors at 157 lbs., placing third at the NECCWA Championships. He was 31-9 at 157 lbs. with 42 takedowns, 14 reversals, 42 escapes, 12 near-falls and three pins. Martini placed fourth at 157 lbs. at the Doug Parker Invitational and third at 157 lbs. at the R.I.T. Invitational.

 

Prior to coming to RIC, Martini attended Hofstra in 2005-06.

 

He is a mathematics/economics major and a 2005 graduate of Cranston High School West.

 

Junior Paul Gerbino (Glen Ridge, NJ) was 6-9 at 133 lbs. with 19 takedowns, two reversals, six escapes and five near-falls on the season.

 

Junior Joe Manley (Wayland, MA) earned All-New England honors at 174 lbs., placing third at the NEWA Championships on Feb. 22. Manley was 23-11 with 31 takedowns, seven reversals, 20 escapes, 14 near-falls and 10 pins on the season. He was named a Second Team Pilgrim League All-Star.

 

Junior Ray Moore (Wrentham, MA) earned All-New England honors at 197 lbs., placing fifth at the NEWA Championships on Feb. 22. He was 15-11 with 25 takedowns, nine reversals 13 escapes, nine near-falls and six pins on the season. Moore placed fourth at 197 lbs. at the Roger Williams Invitational (Nov.15).

 

Sophomore Chris Dean (Copiague, NY) was 2-8 at 184 and 197 lbs. with two takedowns, nine escapes and one near-fall.

 

Sophomore Travis Drappi (West Orange, NJ) was 16-14 at 141 lbs. with 37 takedowns, seven reversals, 35 escapes, seven near-falls and four pins on the season. Drappi placed fifth at 141 lbs. at the Roger Williams Invitational (Nov. 15) and sixth at the RIT Invitational (Dec. 6). He was named to the Pilgrim League’s Scholar-Athlete All-Star Team.

 

Sophomore Brendan Guarino (Lodi, NJ) was 7-6 at 165-174 lbs. with 15 takedowns, four reversals, 10 escapes, four near-falls and four pins before an injury cut short his season.

 

Sophomore Kevin Sutherland (Dauphin, PA) was the New England Champion at 149 lbs. and advanced to the NCAA National Championships. Sutherland, a NWCA Scholar All-American, was also selected to the Pilgrim League’s Scholar-Athlete All-Star Team. He attained All-New England status for the second consecutive season, finishing with a 41-12 overall record to go along with 86 takedowns, seven reversals, 65 escapes, 22 near-falls and one pin. Sutherland earned a third place finish at the Doug Parker Invitational (Nov. 22) and a fourth place finish at the RIT Invitational (Dec. 6). He was named a First Team Pilgrim League All-Star. Sutherland was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the 2009 NEWA Championships.

 

Freshman Kyle Bousquet (Pascoag, RI) was 0-2 at 125 lbs. with four escapes and one near-fall.

 

Freshman Devin Callahan-Cormier (Milford, MA) was 5-12 at 285 lbs. with 10, takedowns, two reversals, 19 escapes, two near-falls and one pin.

 

Freshman Brandon Gauthier (Lowell, MA) was 14-14 at 125 lbs. with 29 takedowns, four reversals, 25 escapes, 10 near-falls and five pins on the season. He placed sixth at the Doug Parker Invitational (Nov. 22). He was named the NEWA Rookie of the Week once.

 

Freshman Jordan Jacquo (New Britain, CT) was 9-11 at 149-174 lbs. with 17 takedowns, four reversals, 14 escapes, 10 near-falls and two pins.

 

Freshman Scott Legacy (Bennington, VT) earned All-New England honors at 133 lbs., placing fifth at the NEWA Championships on Feb. 22. Legacy was 30-11 with 54 takedowns, 10 reversals, 35 escapes, 26 near-falls and 14 pins on the season. He placed third at both the Roger Williams (Nov. 15) and Doug Parker (Nov. 22) Invitationals, while logging a fourth place finish at the RIT Invitational (Dec. 6). He was named a First Team Pilgrim League All-Star. Legacy was named the NEWA Rookie of the Week four times and the Pilgrim League Rookie of the Week once.

 

Freshman Trevor McKenzie (Passaic, NJ) was 2-18 at 149-174 lbs. with 12 takedowns, nine reversals, 21 escapes and three near-falls.

 

Freshman Jake Miller (Broad Brook, CT) was 2-4 at 133 lbs. with eight takedowns, one escape and seven near-falls.

 

Freshman Jared Rhodes (Harrisburg, PA) was 15-12 at 125 lbs. with 31 takedowns, eight reversals, 17 escapes, 29 near-falls and five pins.

 

Freshman Geoff Riccio (Lancaster, MA) was 5-8 at 141 lbs. with 17 takedowns, four reversals, six escapes, six near-falls and one pin.

 

Freshman Steve Saba (Methuen, MA) was 5-17 at 197 and 285 lbs. with 15 takedowns, one reversal, 25 escapes, one near-fall and two pins.

 

Freshman Mike Trasso (Lyndhurst, NJ) was named a First Team Pilgrim League All-Star at 141 lbs. He was 23-9 with 49 takedowns, nine reversals, 34 escapes, 14 near-falls and five pins on the season. Trasso placed second at the Roger Williams Invitational (Nov. 15), and fourth at both the Doug Parker (Nov. 22) and RIT Invitationals (Dec. 6). He was named the NEWA Rookie of the Week once.

 

Freshman Richard Wapenyi (Bridgewater, MA) was 6-11 at 285 lbs. with nine takedowns, four reversals, 21 escapes, one near-fall and one pin.
