ANCHORWOMEN STAY UNBEATEN WITH
CLOSE, 5-4, VICTORY OVER WILDCATS

 

Providence, RI—Senior Julie Bannon (Narragansett, RI) and sophomore Gabriela Batek (Greenville, RI) won at No. 1 and No. 3 singles, respectively, to lead the Rhode Island College women’s tennis team to a come-from-behind win over cross-city rival Johnson & Wales on Tuesday afternoon at the RIC Tennis Courts.

The visitors (0-3) took two of three in doubles action to start the day. Batek and junior Brittany LaBarre (Greenville, RI) earned an 8-6 win at the No. 2 spot for the hosts.

 

 

 

Johnson & Wales sophomore Laura Schwenk (Ottumwa, IA) picked up a win (6-4, 0-6, 6-3) at No. 4 singles and classmate Dana Trimborn (North Wales, PA) won in straight sets (6-3, 6-3) at No. 5 to help the Wildcats build a 4-2 advantage.

 

 

 

RIC (3-0) junior Jaclyn Eastman (Mansfield, MA) earned a straight set (6-2, 6-2) victory at No. 2 singles, setting the stage for Bannon and Batek’s heroics. Bannon won (6-3, 7-6 (7-3)), while Batek bounced back after a first set loss (3-6, 6-4, 10-3).

Batek was the lone Anchorwoman to go undefeated on the day, while Schwenk and Trimborn also went unbeaten.

 

 

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will play at Clark on Thursday, Sept. 17 at 5 p.m.
