MATTHEWS & VERAS HELP
COLONIALS
BLANK ANCHORWOMEN
Providence,
RI—Junior
forward Lauren Matthews (Monroe, CT) scored three goals,
while senior striker Kelli Veras (Trumbull, CT) netted two
markers, as Western Connecticut downed Rhode Island College, 5-0, in
Little East Conference women’s soccer action. |
WestConn (4-4, 1-1) evens its record, both overall
and in league play, while the Anchorwomen (1-5, 0-2) suffer their
fourth consecutive loss. |
The Colonials dominated the game from start to
finish, ending the contest with a 44-5 advantage in shots. Matthews
scored what proved to be the game-winning tally in the 17th
minute. Senior midfielder Angela Wozniak (Ludlow, MA) fired a
shot from the top of the box, forcing RIC junior goalkeeper
Maddie Pirri (Bristol, MA) to make a diving stop. Matthews
collected the loose ball and shot it in off the inside netting. |
RIC kept the score 1-0 for most of the first half,
with its two best scoring opportunities coming on senior midfielder
Christina Tavana (Middletown, CT) free kicks that went over
the net. |
Veras put the game out of reach with two goals 2:09
apart in the 40th and 42nd minutes. In both
instances, she collected ball and fought her way through the RIC
defense for her second and third markers of the season. |
Pirri was lifted for precautionary measures after the
first half, giving way to freshman Libby Lazar (Wakefield, RI)
who had started the game as a forward. |
The visitors were awarded a penalty kick in the 61st
minute due to a hand ball in the box, but senior back Amanda
Genova’s (New Milford, CT) shot went right at Lazar for the
stop. |
Matthews capped the hat trick effort with her second
and third goals of the year in the 58th and 65th
minutes. First, freshman midfielder Brittany Papaj (Newtown, CT)
lofted a pass from 30 yards away that Matthews perfectly headed into
the net. Papaj later sent in Matthews from midfield to cap the
game’s scoring. |
WestConn sophomore goalkeeper Molly Miller
(Middlebury, CT) played 66 minutes and made two saves before
giving way to freshmen Amanda Simon (Brick, NJ) and Gabby
Dadario (East Haven, CT) who didn’t need to make a stop in the
shutout effort. |
Pirri made seven saves and Lazar stopped eight for
the hosts. |
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will play at
Springfield on Tuesday, Sept. 29. |
