DOWN WOMEN'S SOCCER
ANCHORWOMEN, 5-0
|

|
Middletown, CT—Junior
goalkeeper Maddie Pirri (Bristol, RI) made 11 saves, but it
wasn't enough as the Rhode Island College women's soccer team was
outshot, 40-3, in a 5-0 loss at Wesleyan in a non-conference game on
Wednesday afternoon. |

The Anchorwomen
drop to 2-8 in the loss.s RIC has been shut out in five of its eight losses
on the year. The Cardinals snapped a three-game winless streak as
they improve to 6-4-1.
The
previous four meetings between the teams had all resulted in a 2-1
decision with each team winning both at home and on the road during
the stretch. The series began in 2004 with a 2-0 RIC triumph as
Wesleyan evened the overall series at 3-3 this afternoon. The
victory marked Wesleyan’s sixth shutout of the season, tying a
school record achieved in 1994. |

Wesleyan
senior
Ingrid Parl scored the first goal of her three seasons as a
Cardinal in the 84th minute, and added another in the 89th minute,
to pace the host's offense. |

Wesleyan
took the lead for good in the 22nd minute when freshman Kaylin
Berger trapped a pass from freshman Katrina Ellis-Ferrara
at the top of the 18-yard box, dribbled once to her right and put a
shot past Pirri. In the 29th minute, Wesleyan senior Beth
Kenworthy sent a corner kick near the far post, which junior
Cora Lautze put a body on to knock into the net for the 2-0
Cardinal advantage. The half ended that way as Wesleyan held a 19-2
edge in shots. |

In
the 59th minute, the Cardinals made it 3-0 as Ellis Ferrara
took a pass from freshman Lily Kaplan from the right side and
sent a shot inside the left post. An initial shot by Berger had been
blocked by the RIC defense, but the rebound went to Kaplan. |

Then
Parl did the rest, scoring after a good save by Pirri off a shot by
junior Dasha Battelle, then taking a smart pass on the left
just beyond the RIC defense and knocking in a left-footed shot for
the final tally. Wesleyan finished the game with a resounding margin
in shots, but hit the net only 16 times. |

In
the Wesleyan goal, freshman Kate Connolly-Smithwick needed to
make just one save to preserve the shutout, but also had a key
intercept after a good RIC pass split the Cardinal defense to spring
freshman forward Libby Lazar (Wakefield, RI) for a scoring
chance in the second half. Connolly-Smithwick timed it right and
just got to the ball ahead of Lazar with a diving grab. |
