LANGELLIER HELPS ANCHORWOMEN CLOSE OUT REGULAR SEASON WITH, 5-4, WIN OVER UMASS DARTMOUTH

North Dartmouth, MAŚFreshman Marissa Langellier (Greenville, RI) defeated UMass Dartmouth sophomore Courtney Morey (Mashpee, MA) in a super-tiebreaker to lead the Anchorwomen past the Corsairs, 5-4, in Little East Conference women's tennis action in the regular season finale for both clubs at the UMD Athletic Complex.

Despite being under the weather and losing the first set (5-7) at No. 5 singles, Langellier bounced back with a 6-4 win in the second frame and won, 1-0 (10-8) in the decisive set to snap a 4-4 deadlock and give RIC the victory.

Both clubs will meet in the first round of the 2009 Little East Conference Women's Tennis Tournament, which begins on Thursday, Oct. 22. RIC, UMD and Bridgewater State all finished with identical, 4-3, records in league play this fall. By virtue of the tie-breaking formula, the Corsairs capture the fourth seed and will host fifth-seeded RIC at 2 p.m. on Oct. 22. The Bears hold the third seed.

The Anchorwomen raise their overall record to 10-5, reaching the 10-win plateau  for the sixth time in the last seven years. The Corsairs drop to 8-4 overall.

Once again the No. 3-6 spots in singles proved to be the difference in the match for the Anchorwomen. The Corsairs took two of three in doubles action and won at No. 1 and 2 in singles.

Sophomore Gabriela Batek (Greenville, RI), junior Brittany LaBarre (Greenville, RI) and freshman Doris Belanger (West Warwick, RI) all won straight set victories to set up Langellier's heroics.
