WARRIORS SLASH ANCHORMENíS
LITTLE EAST TITLE HOPES

Mansfield, CTóSecond-seeded Eastern Connecticut ended third-seeded Rhode Island Collegeís hopes of repeating as Little East Conference Champions with a 2-0 victory over the Anchormen in semifinal action of the 2009 LEC Menís Soccer  Tournament.

 

Rhode Island College closes out the í09 campaign with a 9-8-2 overall record. The Warriors raise their record to 15-4-1 and will host fourth-seeded UMass Dartmouth, who defeated top-seeded Keene State (2-1) this evening, on Saturday, Nov. 7. It was the third time the two clubs have met in the semifinal round.

 

Senior forward Nicholas Boretti (Marshfield, MA) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 43rd minute, heading in a corner kick from sophomore back Aaron Smiles (Bedford, MA), for his seventh marker of the year.

 

The Warriors added a very important insurance goal in the 60th minute as senior forward Maxim Fantl (West Hartford, CT) punched in his 17th of the year off of a rebound. Smiles picked up his second helper of the day on the goal.

 

Eastern sophomore goalkeeper Carl Appel (West Windsor, CT) made five saves to earn his fourth full shutout victory. RIC junior goalkeeper Helder Faustino (Warwick, RI) made three saves in the loss.

 

Junior David De Melo (Fall River, MA) led the Anchormen with four shots.
