RIC WRAPS UP SPRING TRIP
WITH SWEEP OF OWLS

Winter Have, Fla.--The Rhode Island College baseball team wrapped up their spring trip with a doubleheader sweep over Westfield State at Chain of Lakes Park on Wednesday afternoon. RIC heads back home with a 6-2 overall record, while the two losses drop the Owls to 3-3.

 

The Anchormen used a five-run third inning to break a 2-2 tie and go on to a 9-6 victory in the first game. Junior first baseman Joseph Correia (Pascoag, RI) delivered the big blow with a bases-clearing double. Junior second baseman Andrew Sceeles (Seekonk, MA) knocked in another with an RBI single.

 

Sophomore shortstop Kyle Allaire (Uxbridge, MA) continued his hot hitting, going 3-for-4 with four runs scored. Senior center fielder Jared Rossi (Johnston, RI) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Both players smacked a double and swiped a base.

Sophomore Mike DeWald (Hope Valley, RI) picked up the win, before giving way to senior Paul Vatter (Warwick, RI) and junior Matt Thadeio (West Greenwich, RI).

 

RIC came back from a 2-1 deficit with three runs in the fifth and a pair in the sixth to take the nightcap, 6-2. In the fifth, sophomore third baseman John Stone (Narragansett, RI) scored on a wild pitch, Allaire plated another with a sacrifice fly and Rossi doubled in the frame's final run. Junior catcher Justin Corso (Cranston, RI) and freshman right fielder Kevin Carey (Wakefield, RI) had RBI's in the sixth with a double and single, respectively.

Corso went 3-for-3 with two runs scored, while junior pitcher Chris Day (North Kingstown, RI) went the distance to earn the win. He allowed two runs on five hits, while striking out seven.

 

 In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Coast Guard on Tuesday, March 23 in its home opener.
