SMITH HELPS LEAD RIC TENNIS TO
FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON

 

Providence, RI-Senior Garrett Smith (Exeter, RI) helped lead the Rhode Island College menís tennis team to their first win of the season in a 7-2 victory over cross-city rival Johnson & Wales on Thursday afternoon at the RIC Tennis Courts.

The Anchormen (1-3) also snapped an eight-match losing streak, dating back to April 16, 2009, in the win. The Wildcats (1-3) suffer their third setback of the year.

 

 

 

Smithís (7-5, 6-3) decision over Wildcat freshman John Horton (Kingston, NY) at No. 4 singles helped seal the victory for the hosts. He also teamed with junior captain Matt Allard (Harrisville, RI) for an 8-0 shutout win at the No. 3 doubles spot.

 

 

 

Junior Mike Aiello (Scituate, RI) had an impressive win over JWU sophomore James Adriano (Pawcatuck, CT) at No. 3 singles, only losing one game, en route to a straight set (6-1, 6-0) victory.

Aiello joined junior captain Nate Rebello (Pawtucket, RI), along with Smith and Allard, as the Anchormen who did not lose on the day.

 

 

JWU senior Devin Kitterick (Bridgewater, MA) picked up one of the visitorís two wins with a hard-fought (6-1, 6-7, 7-5) win over RIC freshman Tigran Gasparyan (Smithfield, RI) at the top singles spot.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will travel to Suffolk on Tuesday, Apr. 6.
