ROSSIíS THREE KNOCKS AND FOUR RBI ARENíT ENOUGH IN, 13-8, LOSS TO CLARK

 

Providence, RI-Senior center fielder Jared Rossi (Johnston, RI) went 3-for-4 with four RBI, two runs scored and a double, but the Rhode Island College baseball team lost, 13-8, to Clark in non-conference action at Anchorman Field on Friday afternoon.

The Cougars (9-8) were led by sophomore designated hitter Mitchell DeLorenzo (Berlin, CT) who went 2-for-3 with five RBI, two runs scored and a home run. RIC (8-4) sophomore reliever Kyle Dumont (Pawtucket, RI) took the loss (0-1), while Clark sophomore starter Michael Lamothe (Bellingham, MA) earned the win (1-0).

 

 

 

The visitors pounded RIC pitching for 11 hits, while the hosts made three errors. RIC collected eight knocks and the Cougars made four defensive miscues. The Anchormen used seven pitchers, while Clark used four.

 

 

 

In the top of the first, DeLorenzo struck the first blow with a one-out, three-run homer (2) over the left field fence. The lead was short-lived as the Anchormen came back with a three-spot in the home half of the frame. A Rossi RBI-single, a senior designated hitter Tim Schabowski (Pascoag, RI) RBI-ground out and a sacrifice fly by junior first baseman Joe Correia (Pascoag, RI) tied the game, 3-3.

 

 

 

Clark responded with four runs in the second, capped by senior right fielder Phillip DeMarcoís (Bellingham, MA) RBI-double to left field.

 

 

 

The Anchormen battled back with one run in the third and tied the game, 7-7, in the fourth, paced by Rossiís two-run double and an RBI double by junior third baseman Gary Levesque (East Providence, RI).

 

 

 

Sophomore first baseman Nicholas Kellogg (Florence, MA) tagged Dumont for a two-out homer (1) to left field in the fifth to give the Cougars a lead they would never relinquish.

 

 

 

Clark sealed the win with a four-run seventh, highlighted by a DeMarco two-run triple and a solo blast (3) by sophomore second baseman Shawn Lamothe (Bellingham, MA).

RIC freshman right fielder Kevin Carey (Wakefield, RI) went 2-for-4 with three runs scored, a double and a stolen base.

 

 

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will open Little East Conference play tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader at home vs. Southern Maine (noon).
