ANCHORWOMEN SALVAGE LITTLE
EAST SPLIT WITH KEENE STATE

Providence, RI-Rhode Island College saw a four-game win streak come to an end as the Anchorwomen split a doubleheader with Keene State in Little East Conference softball action on Saturday afternoon at the Dayna A. Bazar Softball Complex.

 Senior right fielder Michelle Perrin

Keene State (11-9, 3-1) took a 4-0 lead in game one and never looked back en route to a 5-2 victory. The Anchorwomen (16-5, 2-2) tied the game twice and took the lead for good in the fifth as RIC held on for the 5-4 win in the second contest.

Sophomore shortstop Katie Bradford (Lebanon, NH) went 3-for-3 with two RBI to lead the Owls to a win in the opener. Sophomore first baseman Haley Chandler (Wakefield, MA) walked, stole second and eventually scored on an error to give Keene State a 1-0 lead in the first.

Freshman outfielder Kayla Joyce (Bridgewater, MA) singled in sophomore pitcher/designated player Courtney Savoie (Stratham, NH) and Bradford knocked in another with an infield single to give the visitors a 3-0 lead after two innings. RIC sophomore starter Kyla Puccini (North Dighton, MA) was chased from the game as she gave way to junior Amanda Berard (Swansea, MA).

In the fourth, Bradford’s RBI single with two down put RIC uncharacteristically behind by four runs. RIC attempted a comeback in the fifth as senior right fielder Michelle Perrin (Saugus, MA), who was seeing her first action of the season, knocked in two with a double to right center field.

KSC senior catcher Stephanie Lavado (Wallingford, CT) made it 5-2 with an RBI ground out in the seventh.

Puccini (4-2) took the loss, allowing three runs, two of which were earned, on three hits and two walks in 1.1 innings. Berard surrendered two runs on five hits and two walks over the final 5.2. Savoie (4-2) earned the win, going 4.2 innings, allowing two runs on five hits to go along with five strikeouts. Sophomore Sara Stocklinski (Newton, NJ) picked up the save (1) over the final 2.1.

 Junior shortstop Donielle Mattoon

RIC junior shortstop Donielle Mattoon (Coventry, RI) went 3-for-4 with one RBI, one run scored and a double to lead RIC to a win in the nightcap.

The Anchorwomen fell behind, 2-0, in the first as Bradford and freshman third baseman Nicole Dupuis (Fitchburg, MA) each contributed RBI singles. RIC senior starter Jenna Deveines (Fitchburg, MA) was tagged for two runs on four hits and forced RIC Head Coach Maria Morin to call on Berard once again.

RIC answered right back with a run in the home half of the frame on a RBI single by junior first baseman Chelsi Panarelli (Shrewsbury, MA). Mattoon tied the game, 2-2, with an RBI single in the third.

Keene State stormed back to take a 3-2 lead on a Bradford homer (2) in the fourth, but junior catcher Kayla Jandreau (Plainville, CT) tied it with an RBI single during the home half of the inning.
