RIC SEES WIN SLIP AWAY TO HAWKS
RWU Ties Game in Ninth & Wins it in the 10th

Providence, RI-Rhode Island College battled back from an early, 7-0, deficit, to take a 9-8 lead heading into the top of ninth, but visiting Roger Williams tied the game then won, 11-9, in 10 innings at Anchorman Field.

RWU (9-21) freshman second baseman Matt Swensen (Charlton, MA) plated the go-ahead run with an RBI fielderís choice, while freshman shortstop John Oppenhimer (Westport, CT) worked a bases loaded RBI walk, in the final inning. Senior third baseman/reliever Ryan MacCarthy (Middleton, MA) earned the win (1-0) and senior first baseman/closer Billy Dunn (Fiskdale, MA) picked up the save (3).

The Hawks chased RIC (17-8) junior starter Eric Blanchard (Warwick, RI) from the game in the first without recording an out. Freshman left fielder Rob Zarthar (Dedham, MA) did the most damage with a two-run double to left center, while sophomore catcher Trevor Manzi (Beverly, MA) also knocked in one with a ground rule double to the right field corner. Another run scored on a wild pitch to give the visitors an early, 4-0, lead.

Three errors in the top of the second led to three more Roger Williams runs. Senior designated hitter Grant Bolin (Simsbury, CT) walked with the bases loaded to start the scoring. RIC freshman reliever David Hoey (Lincoln, RI) got Manzi to ground into what looked like an inning-ending double play, but two throwing errors allowed a pair of Hawk runners to score to make the score 7-0.

The Anchormen put runners on first and third with two down in the second and freshman right fielder Kevin Carey (Wakefield, RI) plated the hostís first run, 7-1, with a bloop single to right.

A three-run third got RIC within three, 7-4. Sophomore third baseman J.P. Stone (Narragansett, RI) doubled in senior center fielder Jared Rossi (Johnston, RI), then came home on senior first baseman Tim Schabowski (Pascoag, RI) towering home run (4) to right.

The two clubs traded runs in the fourth as Bolin homered (4) with one down in the top of the frame, while sophomore shortstop Kyle Allaire (Uxbridge, MA) singled in one for the home team.

RIC loaded the bases in the fifth with no one out. RWU senior reliever Greg Sousa (Billerica, MA) got junior second baseman Andy Sceeles (Seekonk, MA) to ground out into a 6-4-3 double play as Stone trotted home to pull the Anchormen within two, 8-6.

RIC finally battled back to tie the game in the sixth. Allaire tripled with one down in the sixth and was promptly plated by Rossiís bloop single to left. Rossi stole second and came across on a Leveque RBI double to right center.

RWU threatened in the eighth, putting runners on first and second to start the frame. RIC sophomore reliever Cory Madore (Carver, MA) got Zarthar to pop up his sacrifice bunt attempt. Schabowski slid to catch the ball out of mid-air, then recovered to fire a strike to Allaire at second to complete the unconventional twin killing. Freshman reliever Lucas Gagne (Somerset, MA) came on to force a fly out to end the frame.

Rossi led off the bottom of the inning, stole second and came home on Stoneís RBI single to left to give the Anchormen their first lead of the game, 9-8.

RIC turned to junior closer Matt Thadeio (West Greenwich, RI) in the ninth, but two Anchormen errors led to the visitors pushing across the tying run. Freshman first baseman John Gikas (Danvers, MA) reached on an error, was sacrificed to second and was lifted for junior pinch runner P.J. Gouthro (Walpole, MA). Swensen reached on an infield hit, but Gouthro came home on the errant throw, which was attempting to retire Swensen.

The Hawks loaded the bases with one down in the 10th. Freshman reliever Marwing Pena (Cranston, RI) got Swensen to hit a hard grounder to third, but the Anchormen failed to execute a double play as the go-ahead run came home. Oppenhimer later was issued a free pass with the sacks loaded.

Manzi (3-for-6) and Oppenhimer (3-for-5) each had three hits on the day. Manzi, along with Bolin and Zarthar, each knocked in a pair.

Stone went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, two RBI  and a double, while Rossi went 2-for-4 with three runs scored, an RBI and three steals. Freshman reliever Cameron Cash (Dover, NH) took the loss (0-1).

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will continue the Little East Conference schedule at home vs. UMass Dartmouth tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
