ANCHORWOMEN SHUT OUT CORSAIRS IN DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP

North Dartmouth, MA-Junior pitcher Amanda Berard (Swansea, MA) fired a two-hit shutout in a game one victory, while  senior Jenna Deveines (Lowville, NY) registered a one-hit shutout in the nightcap, as Rhode Island College swept a doubleheader (1-0, 11-0) from UMass Dartmouth in Little East Conference softball action.

The first game was a pitching duel between UMD sophomore Brittany Eldridge (Raynham, MA) and Berard. RIC scored in the fifth when junior first baseman Chelsi Panarelli (Shrewsbury, MA) squeezed home junior catcher Kayla Jandreau (Plainville, CT), who led off the inning with a single. Berard earned the win and improved to 7-3, while Eldridge took the loss and dropped to 4-7.

 

Deveines held the Corsairs hitless for the first four innings of the nightcap before giving up the lone hit in the fifth as RIC ended the contest early via the eight-run rule.

 

The Anchorwomen scored eight runs in their final two at bats to break the game open. Junior shortstop Danielle Mattoon (Coventry, RI), sophomore third baseman Cristina Bailey (Londonderry, NH), and junior left fielder Amanda Perry (New Bedford, MA) each drove in two runs. Deveines improved her record to 8-0, while Eldridge started and took the loss and fell to 4-8.

 

UMass Dartmouth is now 7-15 and 0-8 in the Little East Conference, while Rhode Island College is now 20-5 and 4-2.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Westfield State on Thursday, April 22.
