WESTERN CONNECTICUT
SWEEPS SOFTBALL

Providence, RI—Junior right fielder Luigina Facchini (Voluntown, CT) went 3-for-7 with a home run and six RBI to help Western Connecticut sweep Rhode Island College (8-3, 9-5) in Little East Conference action at the Dayna A. Bazar Softball Complex.

The Colonials (17-15, 5-5) have now won five of their last six as they even their Little East record at .500. RIC (24-7, 8-4) were swept in LEC action for the first time since 2008. The four league losses are the most in a season for the program since 2004.

In addition to Facchini, junior designated player/third baseman Amy Hartman (Ellington, CT) and classmate catcher/center fielder Anna Levesque (Waterford, CT) each went 3-for-6. Hartman had five runs scored, a homer and three RBI, while Levesque knocked in four.

Hartman and Facchini helped WestConn to a come from behind, 8-3, win in the first game by smashing a three-run homer and a grand slam, respectively.

Junior pitcher Brittany Connors (Waterford, CT) went the distance for the visitors, allowing three runs on six hits en route to her fourth (4-5) win of the season.

The Anchorwomen took a 2-0 lead in the third as freshman second baseman Missy Jandreau (Plainville, CT) got on board with one down with a line shot to second base. Her sister, junior catcher Kayla Jandreau (Plainville, CT), followed with an inside out hit down the left field line. The ball fell in front of freshman outfielder Ashlie Morris (Wolcott, CT), took a wild hop and rolled all the way to the fence. The younger Jandreau scored all the way from first as her sister slid in for a triple. Senior designated player Michelle Perrin (Saugus, MA) brought in Jandreau with an RBI ground out.

WestConn got one run back in the fourth as sophomore second baseman Jackie Zilnicki (Riverhead, NY) singled to left, stole second and advanced to third when Jandreau’s throw hit her and rolled into the outfield. Levesque knocked her in with a single to left.

The Colonials jumped out to their first lead in the sixth, putting the first two batters aboard against RIC junior starter Amanda Berard (Swansea, MA). Hartman tried to sacrifice the pair over, but was unable to get a bunt down on her first two attempts. It worked out for the best as she hammered a line drive over left field fence to put the visitors up, 4-2.

With two down and two on in the seventh, Hartman drew a walk to load the bases. Facchini followed with a towering homer (5) to make it an 8-2 advantage. Missy Jandreau knocked in one run in the home half of the frame, but Connors got the final out with two on to seal the win.

Berard took the loss (9-4), giving up eight runs (seven earned) on 10 hits.

The Colonials battled back from an early deficit to cruise to a 9-5 win in the nightcap. The nine runs were the most the Anchorwomen have allowed in a game this spring.

Like in the first game, RIC took a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the first, The Anchorwomen loaded the bases against senior pitcher Kara Cullinane (Lindenhurst, NY). Freshman left fielder Kristina Gingell (Pascoag, RI) came through with a single up the middle to bring in a pair.

WestConn stormed back with a four-run third to go up, 4-2. Sophomore shortstop Danielle Basciano (Holmes, NY) reached on a fielder’s choice, stole second, third and scored on an error. The Colonials then loaded the bases against RIC senior starter Jenna Deveines (Lowville, NY) on a Zilnicki single and a pair of walks. Levesque brought in two with a single to left field and a third run scored as the throw to the plate sailed into the WestConn dugout.

Sophomore Kyla Puccini (North Dighton, MA) came on in relief and got the Anchorwomen out of the frame with a ground out.

With two down in the home half of the third, RIC junior first baseman Chelsi Panarelli (Shrewsbury, MA) drilled a home run (7) to straight away center to cut the deficit to a single run, 4-3.

With runners on second and third and one down in the fifth, Facchini once again came through with a bloop hit that landed just over second base to extend WestConn’s advantage to 6-3.

The hosts pulled within a run, 6-5, in the fifth as sophomore third baseman Cristina Bailey (Londonderry, NH) smacked a two-run single. Colonial sophomore reliever Magen Dargon (Trumbull, CT) got out of a bases loaded jam with back-to-back strikeouts to keep her club in the lead.

Western Connecticut again increased its lead to three runs, 8-5, with two in the sixth. Sophomore right fielder Melissa Fracker (Sandy Hook, CT) singled off of Puccini’s glove and then scored on senior first baseman Katelyn Farrell’s (Stratford, CT) RBI triple. Farrell then trotted home on a wild pitch.

WestConn added an insurance run in the seventh as Hartman led off with a triple to the right field corner and came home on Levesque’s sacrifice fly.

Deveines suffered her first loss (9-1) on the season, while Cullinane picked up the win (8-5). She allowed three runs on four hits to go along with a pair of strikeouts in four innings.

In upcoming action, RIC will host Brandeis on Thursday, April 29.
