GOSLIN KEEPS KNIGHTS ALIVE IN NCAA TOURNAMENT ACTION

Providence, R.I.-Senior first baseman Jennifer Goslin (Coatesville, PA) went 3-for-5 with three RBI, a run scored, a double and a home run to help fifth-seeded Neumann University eliminate sixth-seeded Baruch College, 10-1, in game four at the Providence Regional of the 2010 NCAA Div. III Softball Tournament hosted by Rhode Island College.

The Knights (27-17), who lost, 3-0, to second-seeded Moravian earlier in the day, are now 1-1 at the regional and advance to play an opponent to be determined tomorrow at 4 p.m. The Bearcats (23-22) see their season come to an end.

Goslin put the Knights on the board in the top of the first, tagging Baruch junior pitcher Andrea Tepfer (Staten Island, NY) for a three-run homer (5) over the left field fence.

The Bearcats answered with a leadoff solo homer (5) by senior shortstop Melissa Pena (Queens Village, NY) to make the score 3-1.

Neumann added four runs in the fifth as freshman designated player Callie Emel (Salem, NJ) had an RBI fielder’s choice, classmate catcher Jacki Herrington (Somerdale, NJ) smacked a two-run homer (2) and junior center fielder Deanna Christy (Aston, PA) singled in another to give the Knights a commanding, 7-1, advantage.

The Knights continued to add to their lead with three runs in the seventh. Neumann loaded the bases with no outs and junior second baseman Lauren Strack (Morton, PA) got the offense in motion with an RBI fielder’s choice. Junior designated hitter Lauren Castiello (Laural Springs, NJ) followed with a two-run double.

Neumann sophomore starter Sarah McGann (Island Park, NY) earned the win (8-7), allowing just one run on two hits in five innings of work. Tepfer took the loss (16-6).
