Providence, R.I.-Sophomore pitcher Lauren Fitzsimmons (Bridgewater, NJ) fired a one-hit shutout as top-seeded The College of New Jersey eliminated fourth-seeded Wesleyan University, 8-0 (5 innings) in game seven at the Providence Regional of the 2010 NCAA Div. III Softball Tournament hosted by Rhode Island College.

The Lions (33-9) advance to play second-seeded Moravian tomorrow at noon. The Cardinals (24-18-1) see their season come to an end with a 1-2 mark at the regional.  After downing third-seeded Kean, 15-3, on nine hits yesterday, Wesleyan was outscored 14-0 and limited to five hits in their two losses to TCNJ and second-seeded Moravian.

Fitzsimmons (17-1) struck out eight in her sixth shutout effort of the year. She had a no-hitter spoiled with two down in the bottom of the fifth.

TCNJ scored first as senior shortstop Ellen Seavers (Ridgewood, MA) plated sophomore left fielder Crystal Lee (Dover, NJ) with a perfectly placed bunt single. Senior center fielder Danielle Hagel (Egg Harbor City, NJ) then hit a sacrifice fly to center to bring in freshman third baseman Kelly Hommen (Ridgewood, NJ), which gave the Lions a 2-0 advantage.

The Lions went up, 3-0, in the third as freshman second baseman Ashley Sogluizzo (Middletown, NJ) walked, stole second and came home on Hommenís RBI single up the middle.

Hagel provided more offense in the fourth as she led off with a triple to right center and then scored on a wild pitch. Junior designated hitter Caitlyn Seamster (Edison, NJ) ripped an RBI double to score junior right fielder Colleen Cawley (Riverton, NJ). Lee plated Seamster with an opposite field RBI single to left to make it 6-0.

Hagel doubled in Sogluizzo in the fifth and then scored on an error to help the Lions end the game early.

Hagel went 2-for-2 with two runs scored, two RBI a double and a triple.

Wesleyan freshman pitcher Caitlyn Grudzinski (Ft. Worth, TX) took the loss (8-5).
