GROSS & CARMON LEAD GREYHOUNDS TO NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Providence, R.I.-Freshman shortstop Katie Gross (Allentown, PA) went 3-for-3 and knocked in what proved to be the game-winning run and sophomore pitcher Jenna Carmon (Flemington, NJ) fired a five-hit shutout as second seeded Moravian College defeated third-seeded Kean University, 5-0, to win the Providence Regional of the 2010 NCAA Div. III Softball Tournament.

The Greyhounds (34-13) advance to the National Championship Round and will face the winner of the Pineville Regional, which will be either Louisiana College or East Texas Baptist, on Friday, May 21 at 6:30 p.m. The Cougars (32-17) see their season come to an end in the loss. Kean lost the opener of the regional to Wesleyan, but came back to win their next three games to force a decisive title game.

Much like yesterdays, 2-0, win by Kean over Moravian, the two teams played scoreless softball for the first four innings. The Greyhounds finally broke through against Kean senior starter Cassie Shotwell (Dunellen, NJ) in the fifth.

Freshman catcher Tori Thomas (Poughkeepsie, NY) reached on a fielder’s choice and moved over to second on junior designated player Stephanie Falzarano’s (South Plainfield, NJ) walk. With two down, Gross singled to center field to bring in the first run and freshman third baseman Shannen Mohr (Slatington, PA) followed with a two-run single to right field.

Moravian added two more runs in the sixth on a Thomas RBI single and an RBI walk from Gross.

Carmon (25-9) was dominant and did not allow a Kean baserunner past second base all day. She struck out five. For the tournament, she was 4-0 with a 0.96 ERA and 17 strikeouts in 28 innings pitched.

Shotwell, who shut out the Greyhounds yesterday, took the loss (19-9), allowing just three earned runs on eight hits.
